WHAT an ADULT ESL VIRTUAL TUTOR DOES: Tutors offer enrolled students one more more one-hour, private tutoring sessions on Zoom. We do not currently have any in-person tutoring opportunities. Our students need the opportunity to practice English individually outside of class, so this offering is a huge support!
WHAT WE WOULD NEED FROM YOU: In addition to conversing in English, volunteers might be asked to assist a student with a specific English need (pronunciation, reading, writing). Teachers can provide materials to support the tutor/student learning. High EQ, a clear, encouraging manner of engaging with students, and ideally, some understanding of trauma-informed care, are essential to this role. Although you don't need teaching experience to assist in this role, the role requires minimal lesson preparation depending on students' needs.
COMMITMENT: All volunteers will be required to do some online training and observe other tutors. We ask that virtual volunteers commit to at least 13 weeks to start. Tutors choose regular time slots and maintain that schedule for the duration of our trimester (13 weeks of class time). Days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends are all in demand. These appointments are held over Zoom.

Description
Aurora Youth Options (AYO) is the youth prevention team of Aurora Mental Health & Recovery. AYO works with middle and high-school-aged youth and their families, helping young people gain life skills and confidence for personal success and happiness. AYO assesses each individual youth to determine what resources would be best, offer support and make the connection.
Referrals include mentoring, existing community resources, pro-social activities or enhancing life skill-building.
Nearly half the young people between the ages of 10 and 18 live in challenging situations that put them at risk of not living up to their potential. They need a listening ear and gentle guidance that can turn a negative situation into a life lesson.
Our staff, volunteers, and mentors nurture and help young people grow their personal and professional skills leading to greater happiness and a better outlook as they come into adulthood
