Be on the front lines and represent the National Historic District at the Strayer House and/or the New Market Battlefield Military Museum. Greet guests as they arrive, take ticket sales, ring up shop purchases, offer Memberships, and offer a brief overview of how the Civil War impacted the town of New Market, as well as offer general overview of New Market and the places to see and things to do while they are visiting. Mission Statement

The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, works with partners to preserve the hallowed ground of the Valley’s Civil War battlefields, to share its Civil War story with the nation, and to encourage tourism and travel to the Valley’s Civil War sites.

Description

In 1996, Congress designated eight counties in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia as a National Battlefield Site- the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District, which preserves and interprets the regions significant Civil War battlefields and related historic sites.
We have three areas where volunteers can help: Visitor Services- Be on the front lines and help greet guests as a docent at different museum sites in the valley.
Battlefield Maintenance- help in preserving Battlefield property. Mowing, tree removal, fence building, etc.
Library/Archives- help with inventory, Cataloging, and research at the headquarters library.

  • This is a Done in a Day opportunity and there is no prior training or ongoing commitment needed.
  • Must be at least 16
  • Must be able to at least work a 4 hour shift
  • Must be able/willing to operate a Point of Sales System. We are currently using Square.
