ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - National Headquarters

This position supports the American Red Cross National Headquarters (NHQ) Communications (COMM) department. This is a 100% virtual (volunteer-from-home) opportunity based in New York.

The Spanish Translator / Proofreader volunteer will work closely with the Multicultural Communications Director to translate and review written or spoken materials from one language.

*You must be fluent in both Spanish and English for writing and reading and understanding common cultures and phrases in this role.

Duties:

  • Proofread machine-translated materials and make edits to preserve the original meaning and intent
  • Upon request translate and proofread internal and external documents
  • Utilize translation software machine and translation memory (TM) for efficiency and consistency
  • Consult with subject matter experts to understand specialized concepts to translate them appropriately
  • Adhere to Red Cross translation guidelines and terminology, ensuring completed work follows established standards

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the following disciplines: linguistics, translation, interpretation, Spanish philology or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Professional certification in translation
  • Experience translating from English to Spanish
  • Must have a phone, computer, and internet connection.
  • Exceptional proofreading, grammar, writing skills in both Spanish and English.
  • Ability to identify errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, style.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge and command of Microsoft Word.
  • On-call as needed
  • Submission of a resume

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge in context maintenance, glossary, and terminology creation.
  • Experience with machine and translation memory (TM)
  • Interest in continuing education and language fluency assessments for certification

Time Commitment:

  • Two three-hour shifts (morning and/or evening) each week to translate/proofread documents

Volunteer Frequency:

  • Weekly

Length of Appointment:

  • Minimum 6-12 months. And it is renewable
