The Volunteer Legal Consultant will oversee all legal aspects of DC Coding, providing expert legal advice and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. This role involves drafting and reviewing legal documents, advising on legal rights and obligations, and working closely with the leadership team to support the organization's mission and values. This is an online volunteer position offering an excellent opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause and gain valuable experience. The Volunteer Legal Consultant will report directly to the Executive Director.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a law school or have a legal degree. Alternatively, have equivalent experience and passion for legal work.

  • Preferably have experience in nonprofit law, contract law, and intellectual property.

  • Strong knowledge of legal principles and practices.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Proficiency in legal research tools and software.

  • Passionate about the mission of DC Coding and committed to making a positive impact.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • High level of integrity and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Legal Advice: Provide expert legal advice to the leadership team on a wide range of issues, including nonprofit law, contracts, and intellectual property.

  • Document Review and Drafting: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents to ensure the organization’s interests are protected.

  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including those related to nonprofit organizations and data protection.

  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with the organization’s activities and programs.

  • Policy Development: Develop and implement legal policies and procedures to ensure organizational compliance and best practices.

  • Dispute Resolution: Assist in resolving legal disputes and managing any legal issues that arise.
