The volunteer will have the ability to operate computer systems and programs in order to create correspondence, reports, documents, etc. and compile, store, and sort miscellaneous information and files.
The volunteer would independently perform a wide variety of technical activities using initiative and judgment to accomplish highest priorities in all assignments. Deadlines and priorities often change, and the incumbent must handle those changing requests. Consideration of all duties must be given to planning and organizing work between all programs to which support is provided and organizing workload within all program priorities to meet deadlines.
The work includes various duties involving different and unrelated processes and methods. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that procedures and administrative controls of the office work smoothly and that administrative details are not overlooked. Decisions regarding work priorities and time management are based on the incumbent’s knowledge of the goals, policies and priorities and involve independent analysis of each assignment.
Physical Demands: Work is partially sedentary and performed in an office setting. Typically, the volunteer will sit to do the work. In addition, there are physical requirements that include lifting, walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items such as boxes, equipment, papers, books, parts, driving an automobile, etc. Normal precautions are required for extended use of computer keyboards.
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are made to furnish information, provide service, seek guidance on difficult matters and provide assistance, including resolution of problems. The incumbent must employ tact and diplomacy, in contacts.
Work Environment: The work is generally performed in an office setting. Work areas are adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Occasional work outdoors and in the warehouse is required. Occasional travel is required.
Location: Phoenix District BLM Office in Phoenix, AZ.
Time/schedule commitments: Half-time (no more than 10 hours/week) staff position. Work schedule is flexible.
Use of government vehicle: Will be operated by government employee. May ride as passenger in government vehicle on rare occasions.
Use of personal vehicle: For volunteer’s personal transportation to work site.
Tools and equipment: Computer will be shared with public contact rep, printer and other miscellaneous office equipment will be provided.
Personal tools and equipment: Appropriate casual personal attire and footwear. Uniform Shirt will be provided.
Skills and abilities needed: Modest computer skills, picking up and carrying office equipment, occasionally (less than 20 pounds) or cumbersome loads with assistance (e.g., boxes).
Training and certifications: Recognizing potential hazards encountered in and around buildings. Lifting and carrying medium loads.
