Mission Statement: Albatross Aviary is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating tropical and endangered/protected birds, with a special focus on abused, abandoned, and neglected individuals. We provide them with a safe and loving environment while adhering to the principles of the 5 domains of captive care and childhood developmental trauma care.


Role Overview: The Head of Veterinary Affairs is a critical leadership role within Albatross Aviary. This position is ideal for a passionate and knowledgeable individual with a deep understanding of avian health and welfare, preferably a veterinarian or vet tech. The Head of Veterinary Affairs will work closely with the Executive Director, overseeing the health and safety of our avian residents, ensuring the highest standards of care, and providing guidance to the Board of Directors.


Responsibilities:

  • Avian Health Oversight: Monitor and assess the health and well-being of our avian residents, ensuring they receive proper care, nutrition, and medical attention.
  • Health and Safety Protocols: Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop and maintain health and safety protocols for the rescue, in line with best practices and the 5 domains of captive care and childhood developmental trauma care.
  • Dietary Planning: Develop and oversee dietary plans for our birds, ensuring they receive balanced and species-appropriate nutrition.
  • Medication Administration: Oversee the administration of medications to our avian residents, working closely with staff and volunteers to ensure proper dosages and schedules.
  • Local Veterinary Collaboration: Build and maintain strong relationships with local veterinarians and rehabbers. Consult with them on avian health issues, arrange for veterinary visits, and facilitate transport to and from appointments.
  • Emergency Response: Develop and oversee emergency response procedures for avian health crises, including but not limited to injury, illness, or disease outbreaks.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date health records for all birds under our care. Document treatments, medical histories, and outcomes of veterinary interventions.
  • Fundraising: Collaborate with the board and fundraising committee to secure resources for veterinary visits and medical supplies. Assist in fundraising efforts specifically related to avian health needs.
  • Education and Training: Provide education and training to staff and volunteers on avian health topics, including handling, restraint, and first aid.
  • Board Advisory Role: Serve as an advisor to the Board of Directors on matters related to avian health, safety protocols, and best practices in avian rescue and care.
  • Transport Coordination: Oversee the transport of birds to and from veterinary appointments, working with volunteers and staff to ensure safe and stress-free travel.
  • Networking: Collaborate with other avian welfare organizations and professionals to stay informed about the latest advancements in avian health and care.

Qualifications and Expectations:


  • A deep passion for avian welfare and a comprehensive understanding of birds, their behavior, and health.
  • Veterinary degree or certification as a veterinarian or vet tech is preferred.
  • Previous experience in avian health and rescue is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Dedication to Albatross Aviary's mission and values.
  • A collaborative and inclusive leadership style.
  • Willingness to serve in an advisory role and facilitate collaboration with local veterinary professionals.

Time Commitment: The Head of Veterinary Affairs is expected to commit 20-30 hours per month to fulfill their duties effectively. This may include attending board meetings, conducting health assessments, and coordinating veterinary care.
