Position: Volunteer Coordinator - Board of Directors
Organization: Albatross Aviary - A Nonprofit Bird Rescue
Mission Statement: Albatross Aviary is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating tropical and endangered/companion birds, with a special focus on abused, abandoned, and neglected individuals. We provide them with a safe and loving environment, promoting their well-being and welfare.
Role Overview: The Volunteer Coordinator is an integral part of Albatross Aviary's Board of Directors, responsible for managing and coordinating the organization's diverse volunteer program. This role is ideal for an individual with a passion for birds and their welfare, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to engage and inspire volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will play a crucial role in supporting our mission through effective volunteer management.
Responsibilities:
- Volunteer Program Oversight: Develop and implement a comprehensive volunteer program that aligns with the organization's mission and goals.
- Recruitment: Actively recruit volunteers through various channels, including online platforms, community events, and partnerships.
- Training: Develop and conduct training programs for volunteers in each tier (Green, Yellow, and Red), ensuring they are well-equipped for their respective roles.
- Orientation: Provide orientation sessions for new volunteers, familiarizing them with the organization's mission, policies, and safety protocols.
- Tiered Volunteer Management:
- Green Tier: Oversee tasks such as cleaning, fundraising, outreach, and donation pickups. Ensure Green Tier volunteers are engaged and informed about the organization's non-bird-related activities.
- Yellow Tier: Manage bird care caretakers or caretakers in training, facilitating their interactions with the birds in the facility. Provide ongoing support and guidance to ensure the well-being of both volunteers and birds.
- Red Tier: Coordinate training for Red Tier volunteers, who handle bird-related emergencies. Work closely with senior caretakers and veterinary volunteers, ensuring they are well-prepared for their specialized roles.
- Scheduling: Develop and maintain a volunteer schedule, ensuring appropriate coverage for all tasks and activities.
- Communication: Foster clear and consistent communication with volunteers, providing regular updates, information on upcoming events, and opportunities for involvement.
- Recognition and Appreciation: Establish a recognition program to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of volunteers. Celebrate milestones, achievements, and commitment.
- Feedback and Evaluation: Implement mechanisms for collecting feedback from volunteers, conducting evaluations, and using insights to improve the volunteer program.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of volunteer information, including contact details, training completion, and areas of interest or expertise.
- Event Coordination: Collaborate with the Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator to organize events and workshops that engage volunteers and the community.
- Emergency Response Planning: Work with Red Tier volunteers to develop and update emergency response plans for bird-related situations, ensuring a swift and effective response.
- Board Collaboration: Work closely with the Board of Directors to align volunteer efforts with the organization's strategic goals and mission.
Qualifications and Expectations:
- A passion for birds and their welfare.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Previous experience in volunteer management or a related field is advantageous.
- Dedication to Albatross Aviary's mission and values.
- A collaborative and proactive approach to board responsibilities.
- Availability to attend board meetings and fulfill volunteer coordination responsibilities.
Time Commitment: The Volunteer Coordinator is expected to commit 20-30 hours per month to fulfill their duties effectively. This includes attending board meetings, volunteer coordination, and engagement activities.
