Stony Fork Campground

Stony Fork Campground is a perfect choice for a volunteer who wants a beautiful mountain setting while also enjoying the convenience of cell phone coverage and a full service town nearby. Stony Fork is a very popular campground that is only 4 miles from Interstate 77 and adjacent to a paved state road. Located at the base of Big Walker Mountain and adjacent to a scenic byway, this 51 site campground offers peaceful setting for those looking to relax and/or looking for outdoor adventure. See the campground at www.recreation.gov for photos and maps.

Stony Fork has drinking water, 4 bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, and a rental cabin. The 2 campground host sites offer water/30 AMP electric/sewer hookup. Both host sites will accommodate a large class A motorhome. Hosts are provided with a landline phone and a fax machine for communication and receiving reservation updates. Satellite TV is available if you have your own service. Internet is not available in the campground without a Wi Fi card for your computer. There are free wireless services in many businesses in the nearby town of Wytheville (12 miles). Laundry facilities are also available in the rental cabin when it is not occupied by visitors.

ATTRACTIONS: Stony Fork is located in a natural forest setting at the foot of Big Walker Mountain and adjacent to the Big Walker Scenic Byway. The East Fork of Stony Fork Creek winds through the campground and provides water play and trout fishing. A one-mile nature trail will take campers through stands of pine and hardwoods, while the campground loop road itself is popular with walkers. For the more experienced hiker, Seven Sisters Trail leads from the campground to the top of Little Walker Mountain and back to the Scenic Byway.

CLIMATE and VEGETATION: This campground is located at an elevation of approximately 2,400 feet. Summer days are warm with average temperatures in the upper 70’s to low 90’s, and evenings cool down into the 50’s or 60’s.
