ORGANIZATION: FW BLACK COLLECTIVE

  • 4 people are interested

We currently have four Board Members and are looking to continue the growth of our Board of Directors for the Federal Way Black Collective. Our work is based on the community driven needs. We routinely host community meetings, engage with and in collaboration with other community member organizations, hosting events that coincide with the advancement of the City of Federal Way. The strengths of the black community are consistently overcoming marginalization. Priorities we have heard from our community entail quality and holistic childcare, culturally reflective educators, equity in city planning, equitable access to resources, employment training, home ownership, and livable wage employment. Throughout history as a community we have always thrived best when we work together. We are the collective that provides a home for our community to build and strategize.

Mission Statement

The Federal Way Black Collective is an organization that is committed to providing voice, building strategy, and driving change in communities of color through policy development and the creation of resources that are equitable and culturally reflective. -We work with community to identify gaps in policy and develop solutions. -We focus on strength-based strategies in order to advance underserved communities. -We implement policy changes through coordinated efforts and community advocacy. -We provide communities with access to resources and consultations in order to make informed decisions.

Description

The FW Black Collective (FWBC) was formed in 2018 as a community resource by local leaders. Our community was looking for a platform that enabled us to collectively strategize and create change within the Federal Way area. We were tired of feeling excluded from economic opportunities, civil engagement and policy developments that governed our lives. Out of these needs, the FW Black Collective was born.

Our collective is made up of individuals who reflect and have lived experiences similar to the communities that we serve. We build bottom-up strategies that are strengths-focused and evidence-based through surveying the community, analyzing data and partnering with other organizations that are aligned in mission and values. Drawing on over 30 years of community work and advocacy experience, we bring together our deep knowledge of the community and extensive expertise in order to empower the very people that mentored, supported and raised us.
