Position: Internship Emergency Response Supportive - Sexual Assault Division

Mission Statement: Eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

Primary Function: Provide emotional support and information to domestic assault, sexual assault, and human trafficking survivors, and their family members/friends.

Qualifications:

1. Must be a current student in a BA or MA-related program
2. 18 years of age or older (Male and Female)
3. Ability to respond to a call within 30 minutes, and
4. Be available for calls three times a month, Monday - Friday, between 5:00 pm, and 8:00 am, weekends and holidays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
5. Excellent verbal and non-verbal Communication Skills

Responsibilities:

1. Respect the confidentiality of all client/agency information
2. Be available for calls three times a month, Monday - Friday, between 5:00 pm, and 8:00 am, on weekends and holidays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
3. Respond to the YWCA site or local hospital when a sexual assault is reported.
4. Provide support and advocacy on-site to primary and secondary victims of sexual assault.
5. Complete the required supportive contact forms
6. Adhere to the policies and procedures of the YWCA Sexual Assault Program.
7. Complete 13.5-hour training/screening process
8. Patient and non-judgmental in relation to survivor’s interests and attitudes
9. Ability to work under pressure

Training Requirements:

1. Sexual Assault Nurse Exam (SANE) and Emergency Response Team 15-hour training provided by YWCA in collaboration with other agencies
2. General understanding of issues related to racial and gender issues and injustice, equality, equity, and Women’s Rights. YWCA will provide training
3. General understanding of YWCA Mission.

Training Covers:

1. Domestic assault laws and information on legal processes
2. Information on evidence collection/medical concerns
3. Power and control wheel and common reactions to assault
4. Issuers of diversity
5. Basic empathy skills
6. Roleplay
7. Self-care for caregivers/support providers
