If you like to work with numbers and people, this program is for you.
This program provides free tax preparation assistance to low and middle-income individuals of all ages, with special attention given to seniors (60 ). Helping others sort through stacks of paperwork and lines of numbers is what the free AARP Tax-Aide Volunteer Program is all about.
LaVerne Gordon, Contra Costa County Tax-Aide Volunteer Coordinator, says, "The main requirement to be a counselor is that you have prepared your own taxes and are comfortable using a computer."
Interested volunteers are provided free training in federal and state tax law and must pass an IRS open-book certification test. Volunteers are also trained in using the IRS-provided software for preparing electronically filed tax returns.
Demand for this important and helpful service is increasing each year and in particular, more counselors are need to work at sites in Contra Costa County.
We can also use volunteers as technology assistants, public relation representatives, appointment schedulers and receptionists.

Mission Statement
AARP Tax-Aide is a nation-wide, volunteer-run program that provides free tax assistance, preparation and e-filing for low-to-moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older. Through IRS certified volunteers, Tax-Aide will assist in the preparation and filing Federal Form 1040 and California State Form 540 plus certain other required schedules and forms. The Contra Costa program is sponsored by AARP's charitable affiliate, the AARP Foundation, in cooperation with Contra Costa County, the Internal Revenue Service, and the California Franchise Tax Board. We operate 19 tax preparation sites that are open from February 1st until April 15th each year.
Description
Contra Costa County AARP Tax-Aide volunteers help taxpayers of all ages, focusing on those who are age 60 and older. They are members of a team providing free tax preparation and e-filing of Federal and California tax returns. The volunteers are IRS Certified tax counselors, supervisors, training coordinators, instructors, technology coordinators, appointment schedulers, and greeters.
AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, free volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service which helps taxpayers with limited and moderate income.
People who are looking for a challenging, and fun, volunteer opportunity and if they are comfortable working on basic tax returns and use a computer, they can become a Certified Tax Counselor.
The program is offered at approximately 19 sites in Contra Costa County including senior centers, libraries and other convenient locations from February 1 through April 15 every year.
