*This is a placeholder event and not a sign-up opportunity, please contact Noah Chan for more information about getting started At the Shelf of Hope, we serve about 100 people every week, putting food on the tables of mothers, fathers, children, and seniors. Many people depend on this food shelf as a weekly supplement for their needs, and it takes a strong, consistent team to meet that need every week. Volunteers have the opportunity to interface directly with their community, showing them care and humanity. They are also working with like-minded people, who believe that every human being deserves food and their basic needs met. If this is inline with your values, please consider applying! SOH Spanish Specialist Overview: Agate Housing and Services serves people experiencing homelessness with the mission of ending homelessness and relieving hunger. One way we do this is by providing the community with a food shelf called Shelf of Hope (SOH). The SOH is free to the public and open every Wednesday, 10:00AM - 1:00PM, serving shelf stable, frozen, refrigerated, and fresh foods depending on the season. The SOH Spanish Specialist is fluent in Spanish and works with Wednesday shoppers who only primarily speak the Spanish language. Most of the volunteers in the food shelf only speak English, and only a couple know some words in Spanish, but the number of Spanish speaking shoppers has been increasing. This Specialist would make the SOH more accessible to the community and break down language barriers. The SOH Spanish Specialist supports the general operations of the food shelf where needed, including but not limited to assisting shoppers, tracking numbers, setting up, breaking down, and cleaning on Wednesdays. Responsibilities: Assist Spanish speaking shoppers Coordinate foot traffic Track shopper and distribution data Pack bags of cold items Restock shelves Attend meetings Collaborate and cooperate with team members Set up and close down Clean rooms as needed Other duties as necessary Training and Confidentiality: The Food Shelf Generalist will be trained by Mary Fondren, Client Engagement Specialist, Kate Wittenstein, Admin and Communications Specialist, or Munchie, Organizational Specialist. Since the Generalist may be exposed to client information that is private, they must sign the Volunteer Handbook which includes a confidentiality agreement. Support and Supervision: The Food Shelf Generalist’s on-site supervisor will be the Shelf of Hope Coordinator. They will be working directly and side by side with them each time they come in. All questions and concerns surrounding day-to-day operations can be directed to Mary and Kate. They can also contact Noah Chan, the volunteer manager. Commitment: Minimum commitment: 6 months Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, lift, and move heavy objects Must be able to come on a consistent, weekly basis Wednesdays, 8:30AM, 5-6 hours Location: Food Centre - 714 Park Ave, Minneapolis, MN, 55404 Requirements: Must be fluent in Spanish Must be able to handle busy, high energy, and sometimes demanding environments Must be able to work as a team Must have reliable transportation to and from the Shelf of Hope Commitment to Agate Housing and Services mission and values Benefit to the Volunteer By becoming an SOH Spanish Specialist, you are joining hands with a team of people who believe that all human beings deserve food and their basic needs met. You work directly with the people you are helping, face-to-face, building a caring and connective community. The people Agate serves are often alienated by stereotypes and misconceptions. This unique position gives you the opportunity to break down these misunderstandings and experience them for who they are: human beings. This role is also great for anyone looking for experience interacting with people who are unstably housed or experiencing homelessness. Impact: Local community members have depended on the Shelf of Hope since before it moved to the Food Centre in 2019. Food security is a real problem, which is why it is so important to offer our neighbors free groceries and supplies. In 2021, 4,160 people were able to pick up canned goods, meats, ready-to-eat meals, dairy products, eggs, snacks, household products, seasonal gear, and fresh produce. The Food Shelf Generalist helps us continue relieving hunger and improving food security by working directly with clients and supporting the Shelf of Hope behind the scenes. Snack packs are given to our program participants who arrive at our Welcome Center to access supportive services. Being able to offer 'quick fuel' in the form of a small resource like this creates a positive community atmosphere in our spaces while clients access needed services. Snack packs are typically sandwich-size zip lock bags, paper lunch bags, or drawstring bags that include non-perishable foods, water bottles on the side, etc. Volunteers purchase supplies and assemble bags on their own time, then schedule a drop-off with Agate staff (contact info below). Below is our suggested list of what to include (feel free to include as few or as many of these items as you're able, into bags with 3-4 snack foods per bag): Beef Jerky Protein shake Granola or soft textured Nutrition Bars Trail Mix Pudding Cups Fruit Snacks Small Cookie Packs Small Cracker Packs Bottled Water or Water Bottles (on the side if using a snack bag that doesn't accommodate their size) Juice Boxes/Bags Snack Crackers Candy Dried Fruit Plastic Utensil Packets, or Reusable Utensils Guidelines and notes (read before assembly): Products included in packs must be unopened and prior to their Best By, Use By, or Expiration date. We also accept (and greatly appreciate!) individual donations of each of these listed items. Delivery can be arranged through a drop-off coordinated with Abby (info below) or easily arranged and delivered to us through a third party via our Amazon Wishlist. Overview : Agate Housing and Services helps people experiencing homelessness with the mission of ending homelessness and hunger. In downtown Minneapolis, we have a Food Centre where we offer free meals and a food shelf. It’s also a space for offering extra help and resources, which is why we are looking for a Resource Specialist to come in once a week. Ted Pouliot has been doing this for many years, coming on a weekly basis, building a robust portfolio of updated resources for people experiencing homelessness and then printing copies out for them. He brings his own copy machine, sign, and business cards. We are looking for a Resource Specialist to take over Ted’s responsibilities so he can retire from this role. Responsibilities : Produce copies of resources as needed by guests, diners, and shoppers at the Food Centre Take note of any missing resources or information to research and add to the portfolio later Add to and update information in resource portfolio Requirements and Commitment Aligns with the mission and values of Agate Comes to the Food Centre on a weekly basis Able to interact directly with individuals experiencing housing instability and related experiences Able to work in a high energy environment Confidentiality: The Resource Specialist may be exposed to the personal information of people they are trying to help. They will have to pass a background check and sign the Volunteer Handbook, which include rules and boundaries around confidential information. Training : The Resource Specialist will be trained by Ted Pouliot, to become his official successor. After Ted’s official retirement, they can direct any further questions or concerns to Noah Chan, the Volunteer Development and Internal Engagement Manager. Supervision : The Resource Specialist will be supervised by Ted during training and up until he transitions out of this role. They will be shadowing him in the beginning, and gradually transitioning into an independent role. When Ted is not present, the Resource Specialist can report any questions, comments, or concerns to Noah Chan, the Volunteer Development and Internal Engagement Manager, their official on-site supervisor. In the case that the on-site supervisor is not available, Kitchen Manager or Food Shelf Coordinator, will be the backup contact. Location : 714 Park Ave, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55404 Impact : There are a variety of resources available in the Twin Cities to help people experiencing homelessness, but not everyone has direct access to that information, or may not know where to look. The Resource Specialist plays an important role by connecting people to the resources they need, pointing them in the right direction, or giving them a good place to start. As information and resources change, it is crucial that they update their records so that people can receive the most accurate information and make the best use of their time. The Resource Specialist can help people spend more time receiving the services and support they need and less time looking for it. When we transition someone into their own home, they often don’t have everything they need and must wait weeks to get those supplies. It can be challenging for them if they don’t have a TV to watch, a book to read, or crafts/games to keep themselves busy during that period. Additionally, with the current COVID-19 pandemic, our on-site supportive housing residents (and shelter residents) have been left with fewer options to keep themselves busy and enjoy their free time. It has been a tremendous challenge for our residents who are used to spending their time visiting friends and family as well as visiting congregate community spaces that are no longer available. As human beings, we all deserve to relax and entertain ourselves as we navigate life. Help out our residents by providing with them Comfort Kits! Please assemble the following items in bags, backpacks, tupperware containers, or gallon Ziploc bags. Adult-focused Comfort Kits: Adult coloring books Journal or notebook Gift cards (e.g., coffee shop, grocery store, etc.) Art Supplies such as... We just ask you avoid real candles (these are not allowed in our buildings for safety purposes) and ensure items are new or in like-new condition (i.e., journals have not been written in, puzzles have all their pieces, no items have rips, stains, or tears, etc.). Reach out to Abby Abele at Abigail.Abele@AgateMN.org or 612-715-0449 with any questions, or to schedule a drop off of assembled baskets. Thank you for your generosity and support of our mission to end homelessness and relieve hunger through action and advocacy.
