Be a Reading Seed coach: Do you find joy in seeking out the perfect book? Enjoy learning something new? Think everyone should have access to programs and materials that spark a love of reading? If so, this is the volunteer gig for you! Reading Seed Coaches work one-to-one with students in kindergarten - 2nd grade and encourage a love of reading. Coaches are guided by their students’ interests and provide a non-judgmental environment in which children can explore books and stories of their choosing. By honoring their students’ knowledge and strengths, coaches help increase students’ confidence and help them identify reading as a positive, engaging experience. Requirements: Our most successful coaches are flexible, communicative, positive, and open to trying new things. The ideal candidate is joyful and approaches challenges with patience and a positive, strengths-based attitude. At Literacy Connects we consider ourselves to be lifelong learners and are looking for volunteers who are excited to learn as well. Must be 18 years or older. Commitment: Coaching occurs Monday-Friday during school hours at various elementary schools throughout Pima County. The direct service commitment is 90 minutes one day per week for at least one full school year. Indirect service commitment includes additional time for session preparation, planning, and continuing education.

Be a Basic Computer Skills Tutor for Adults: Volunteer to tutor adults in basic computer skills using an interactive, student-centered approach. In the computer class, the students are very new to computers and using the internet. Tutors will work with students on skills like navigating with a mouse and keyboard, logging into and sending emails, and searching online. The students are adult learners who take multiple classes with Literacy Connects: in addition to basic computer skills, they are learning basic literacy, math, and/or English as a Second Language. Slowing down the pace of the class to talk about the vocabulary or to read-and-repeat what is on the screen is common. These are in-person classes held at the Literacy Connects office (200 E. Yavapai Road) or at various Pima County Public Library branches in Tucson. Teachers needed in English and Spanish! Requirements: Attend an Information Session and complete a background check and 3-5 hours of initial training. Training focuses on teaching strategies for adult learners -- volunteers who already have basic computer knowledge desired. Must be at least 18 years of age. $65 training fee. Commitment: Minimum 9 months (three sessions). Sessions run 8-9 weeks. Be available to meet on a set schedule, once a week. Classes are 1.5-2 hours long.
