Throughout the day at Willis Dady, there are phone calls, donations, and multiple visitors. Since many are directed to different staff in the shelter, having a point person to direct inquiries is instrumental in allowing our agency to function at its greatest capacity. As such, having a volunteer’s help allows the shelter in running smoothly throughout the day while allowing our staff to better focus on their jobs. Duties also include answering the phone and refer the call to the proper party, welcoming visitors at the front desk, assist them with their needs, collecting and recording donations that come throughout the day, and understanding how to use the computer regarding logging in information. Qualifications include basic computer knowledge and great communication skills. You should also possess patience, empathy, and a desire to serve the community.

Having outreach food bags to hand out to clients is extremely helpful. These can be distributed to clients in a number of ways: Our Street Outreach Team can carry these bags with them to hand out to clients who are sleeping outside of somewhere else not meant for habitation. These clients often have limited access to food, so having some on hand is very helpful for our team. We also try to keep non-perishable food in the donation room of our shelter. This food can be handed out to clients in our shelter who are waiting for a food stamp card to arrive or have mobility issues and cannot get to a community food pantry. Outreach clients or other community members also visit our shelter for supplies as they learn to navigate local resources and get connected to a case manager. To help with this need we are looking for donors to assemble Outreach Food Bags to be dropped off at our shelter (1247 4th Ave SE). Food bags should include a Ziploc Bag with a combination of the following: Protein or granola bars Beef jerky Trail mix Cracker packs Fruit snacks Cans or packets of chicken or tuna Please reach out to our Volunteer and Operations Coordinator at 319-362-7555 or sierra@willisdady.org with any questions!

Virtual Opportunity
This is the perfect way for someone to get involved who doesn’t have any extra time to give. Add trash bags (either 10 or 55 gallons) to your list and pick them up when you’re out shopping. You can drop them off to Willis Dady when you’re already out and about. Do your shopping online instead? Have them shipped to the shelter! Why trash bags? Just like any home, our shelter goes through a lot of trash bags. The 10 gallon trash cans are found around our shelter and in individual offices. 55 gallon trash cans are in our client kitchens. However, not many donors think of bringing in trash bags, so we find ourselves having to buy them ourselves. This takes away money that could be used for things like housing deposits or replacing a lost ID. We need donors like you to help with this high-need item! Key responsibilities include: - Meet with our Volunteer Coordinator to learn about Willis Dady’s ongoing needs. - Commit to purchasing paper towels to donate to Willis Dady on a regular basis. - Purchase or have the donation shipped to Willis Dady.

H aving a volunteer to monitor our laundry and help organize the clean items is a huge help towards making sure we have the necessary clothing and linens for our clients. This position also helps us to redistribute donations we cannot use to other agencies. These volunteers will put items into the washer and dryer, organize the donation areas (relevant to items being washed), communicate information to the staff, and coordinate with other agencies on donations we cannot take that they may be able to use. This is a flexible, on-call opportunity. Depending on the needs each week, laundry volunteers may be called in to aid our regularly scheduled donation room organizers. A volunteer would be contacted either by email or phone when we need extra help with laundry. Volunteers will have the opportunity to accept or turndown the offer on a day-by-day basis. Please bring a book or something to work on in between loads. Each cycle takes about 40 minutes and depending on how long it takes to fold/hang you may have some down time. You will have access to our breakroom or conference room in between loads.
