Help bridge the digital literacy divide in our community. The Hayward Public Library is offers classes to bridge the digital literacy divide. These classes teach adults computer basics from parts of a computer to internet safety. Having digital literacy skills can greatly improve a person’s quality of life and is essential to being an active participant in today’s technologically advancing world. Volunteers will lead a 6-week Digital Literacy Class, once a week, for 1.5 hours. Currently, classes take place on Thursdays from 4-5:30PM. All sessions are at the Downtown Hayward Library. We are currently searching for English/Spanish bilingual speakers. Familiarity with wi-fi hotspots, tablets, laptops, and Chromebooks Sufficient grasp of basic computer & digital literacy concepts Familiarity with programs, such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office Self-motivation/direction Sensitivity to diverse cultures and populations 18 years old or above Live Scan background check

Assist adults learning English as a second language in improving their conversational English skills in an informal, small group setting. Volunteers host one class weekly in person at Josephine Lum Lodge, Weekes Branch Library, the Downtown Hayward Library, or virtually. Volunteers fluent in Cantonese and/or Mandarin are preferred for Josephine Lum Lodge. Key Responsibilities: Plan and lead small group activities and discussions for adults learning English. Submit simple monthly reports on hours and participants. Maintain contact with Literacy Plus regarding needs, concerns, and any questions that may arise. Benefits to the Volunteer: Gain experience in working with people from diverse backgrounds Learn about other cultures and language groups Meet a variety of interesting people Make a valuable contribution to our community Sharpen ESL teaching skills Requirements: The ability to communicate effectively and patiently with adults and seniors of all backgrounds, and library personnel. Background Check Orientation or Training 1 Hour a Week Min. 6 month commitment Tutors must be 18 or older and speak English clearly. You do not need a teaching background to be an English Conversation Circle leader.

Literacy is the key to independence, self-sufficiency and pride. Help empower someone by providing them with the tools needed to access all of life's possibilities. 1-2 hours a week can change someone's life - and your life, too. Literacy Plus, Hayward Public Library's adult literacy program, conducts a free, online training for new volunteer tutors three times per year. Volunteers must complete an online Tutor Training course, attend the live Zoom orientation, and attend the in-person Tutor Training. Literacy Tutor Qualifications: Tutors must be 18 or older, speak English clearly, and have good reading and writing skills. You do not need a teaching background to be a tutor. Tutors must also commit to 1 to 2 hours of tutoring a week for at least six months. All tutor applicants must also pass a background check, and fully participate in the tutor training sessions. *Volunteers must be located in the surrounding area* We offer a hybrid Tutor Orientation and Training. Maker Space Background: Hayward Public Library launched a Maker Space for members of the public in 2023. Maker Space Volunteer Tutors are being recruited to expand support for patrons learning to use equipment in the Maker Space. Volunteers will be provided training by Hayward Public Library staff and encouraged to continue to learn and teach the public. Maker Space Volunteer Tutors will host a weekly 2-hour session, meeting with community members on a drop-in or scheduled basis. Weekly sessions will take place at the Downtown Hayward Library Maker Space. Digital Media Lab Background: To compliment Hayward Public Library’s Digital Media Lab, staff are launching a digital media literacy program for teens and adult members of the public. Digital Media Lab Volunteer Tutors will be provided training by Hayward Public Library staff and provided resources to reference. Digital Media Lab Volunteer Tutors will host a weekly 2-hour session, meeting with community members on a drop-in or scheduled basis. Weekly sessions will take place at the Downtown Hayward Library.
