Mission Statement

To create stable, vibrant and healthy communities by developing, financing and operating affordable, program-enriched housing for families, seniors and people with special needs who lack the economic resources to access quality, safe housing opportunities.

Description

Mercy Housing was founded in 1981 in response to the lack of stable, affordable housing for vulnerable populations. In working to fulfill our mission, Mercy Housing California has developed more than 154 affordable housing communities in 36 counties throughout California, providing 17,000+ homes and serving over 24,000 people in need.

Mercy's commitment to program-enriched housing distinguishes us from many other large scale affordable housing developers. Housing is foundational - everyone needs a home. But many people who have endured poverty and other challenges need an additional hand-up to create the lives they want for themselves and their families. Our dedicated staff and volunteers work with residents right in their homes and neighborhoods on issues like health and wellness, housing stability, financial security as well as provide a full range of enriching out-of-school time options for youth.

The volunteer coordinator, Kylie is very friendly and talks you through the process of applying for the volunteer position with precise detail. Though I still have yet to volunteer with this organization, I will comment that it would be a very good decision to consider them for your volunteer work.

Had a really nice volunteering experience here! My coworkers and I volunteered around Thanksgiving time, half of us went to 1180 4th to pack boxes of food and the other half went to 1880 Pine to serve a Thanksgiving meal. Everything was well organized and ran smoothly and we enjoyed meeting the coordinators and other volunteers as well as those who work at the property. We would definitely volunteer with Mercy Housing again!

I've been volunteering at Villa Madera in Oxnard, CA this summer helping to implement the Kidz Science curriculum. The children are wonderful - actively engaged, warm, helpful! The site staff assist me at all turns. The site also provides lunch to any minors that stop by. I recommend volunteering with Mercy Housing at Villa Madera for anyone looking to work with children in an after school program!

I have been volunteering with the Gleason Park Kids Science Camp this summer through Mercy Housing in Stockton. Everyone I have worked with has been extremely nice and supportive and the kids have been very enjoyable. I think it is so great what Mercy Housing is doing to help low income families, especially the children by providing free breakfast and lunch five days a week and a place for the kids to go for a few hours during the day. I see the kids' faces light up when we take them to the playground or bring out the slime for them to play with. I have had a very positive experience with Mercy Housing and Gleason Park and I would recommend this experience to anyone who is interested in helping low income families, especially their kids.
