Mission Statement
In order to more fully serve adults who lack basic skills and English profiency, the mission of the Volunteer Tutor Program is to support all instructional and some non-instructional aspects of the Adult Basic Education, General Equivalancy Degree and English as a Second Language programs on the BCC campus and in the community, by providing quality, well-trained and oriented tutors to:]-assist in the classroom-assist in the Basic Skills Lab-facilitate a Talk Time group-lead a supplemental, instruction based, small group-help with fundraising projects that are integral to the ABE program-carry out special projects related directly to student need.
Description
The Volunteer Tutor Program is the backbone of the Adult Basic Education Program at Bellevue Community College. Volunteers are recruited and trained to tutor students in basic reading, writing and math, and English language skills. They provide necessary support, encouragement and reinforcement to help students achieve their personal and professional goals. Volunteers make a committment of 2-4 hours per week for a minimum of six months. During that time they receive appropriate training and continued support from the staff and faculty of the ABE program.
