IRIS Mentor- Refugee Support (Spanish/Farsi/Pashto)

The Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Service (IRIS) is a social and legal service agency dedicated to aiding refugees, asylees, migrants and other displaced persons fleeing persecution. This year, IRIS will be resettling more refugee families and individuals than we have ever before. Involvement from established community members broadens the quality of support newcomers receive. Newcomers have many new social, economic, and environmental factors to navigate. With kind and dedicated volunteers as IRIS Mentors, IRIS services will be expanded to include greater social connection and individualized support in overcoming resettlement challenges. These are significant assets in developing stable self-sufficiency. An IRIS Mentor will be a reliable connection and support for a refugee client. Using their knowledge of the local area and life experiences, IRIS Mentors will work with refugees on specific goals for reaching self-sufficiency in LA, depending on client need and mentor background. Mentors will need to note activities completed with clients. This mentorship position is a commitment to support for at least 3 months. After 3 months, mentors can start supporting a different newcomer, continue with the established relationship, or both! Ex)Professional Development- work with client to create a resume, search for jobs, schedule interviews, find skill-building opportunities, prepare for interviews, complete hiring paperwork, etc. Healthcare Navigation Support- work with client to guide them through identifying appropriate care providers, scheduling and following up with medical appointments Financial Literacy- work with client to discuss the U.S. financial system, banking, money habits, credit-building, financial stability, and more. More roles available, depending on Mentor background/skillset IRIS Clients must reside within a 100-mile radius of the IRIS office. Volunteers will work with the Volunteer Coordinator to establish their boundaries of support for driving distance.

Refugee Welcomer & Driver

The Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Service (IRIS) is a social and legal service agency dedicated to aiding refugees, asylees, migrants and other displaced persons fleeing persecution. This year, IRIS will be resettling more refugee families and individuals than we have ever before. Involvement from established community members broadens the quality of support newcomers receive. Newcomers have many new social, economic, and environmental factors to navigate.The volunteer in this position will have a crucial role of making sure the refugees’ resettlement process is off to a smooth, welcoming start. A warm greeting, connecting them with relatives, and transportation to housing are important first steps in IRIS’s resettlement support for refugees. The Volunteer Welcomer & Driver can include the following responsibilities: Complete new volunteer orientation Promptly drive to the LAX airport to welcome the newcomers as an IRIS representative Print and provide the official welcome letter to newcomers Coordinate with the newcomers’ relatives to facilitate the connection between them Provide transportation of client to their relatives’ housing/temporary housing Communicate with Newcomers & their relatives to ensure immediate food and cellphone access Document volunteer activities in IRIS’s user-friendly software Some clients may need to be transported further distances from the airport. Volunteers will work with the Volunteer Coordinator to establish their boundaries of support for driving distance.

Mission Statement

The mission of Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Service (IRIS) is to provide a gracious welcome as well as tangible tools and connections to help new arrivals achieve self-sufficiency in the United States. IRIS has several programs including: refugee resettlement, immigration legal services, cultural orientation, food pantry program and an ESL/Civics program. IRIS is a program of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and operates in conjunction with Episcopal Migration Ministries.

IRIS provides a gracious welcome and tangible tools for self-sufficiency to hundreds of refugees, immigrants, and asylees in the Greater Los Angeles region each year.

IRIS is a program of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and the Southern California affiliate of Episcopal Migration Ministries. Since 2005, IRIS has helped over 10,000 refugees, and immigrants find hope, hospitality, and a safe haven in our community.

As a Department of Justice Office of Legal Access Program, IRIS offers free and low cost services to clients in the Greater Los Angeles area with the help of accredited staff and on staff immigration attorney. IRIS provides its clients with professional services and assistance in navigating today's complex immigration system. IRIS is pleased to offer a wide array of services including:
