Description

Heartland Hospice volunteers offer support, companionship and practical, compassionate help. Some interact directly with patients and families. Others prefer to work behind the scenes in the office setting. As a volunteer, you help determine which tasks you’re best suited to perform. The tasks of volunteers include:

  • Helping with office support tasks at the agency
  • Running errands for patients and families
  • Staying with patients so family members can get a much-needed rest
  • Reading, or providing a comforting touch
  • Playing or singing soothing music to patients
  • Keeping vigil with patients in their final hours

These and other tasks are why hospice volunteers are such an essential part of the Heartland experience.

With my father dying of cancer in 2011 and at home with hospice I know how much it ment to him to have his family and the hospice workers there. My dad was always friendly and loved people. I strongly believe in helping where we can with the skills we have and know. I feel more people need to connect with other people. Show love, kindness, and compassion. Share a smile. They need as as much we need them. Learn from them. Learn their history. Share your story and experience. Spend time with them doing their hobbies and doing yours. Learn something new. Make this world a better place. I feel the way the world is now if we give more to people learn more from people, maybe this world could change. It all starts with a smile, kindness, love. This would be a good place to start.
