Mission Statement
Drug Policy Australia raises awareness of the harms to individuals and the Public Health associated with the use of psychoactive substances and undertakes education, research and advocacy of proven harm-reduction strategies to minimise that harm. We believe that trying to enforce abstinence by prohibition is unrealistic and counter-productive in modern Australia which has one of the highest per capita consumption rates of illicit drugs in the western world. Because of this high prevalence of drug use, the optimum health outcome for those Australians using drugs and their families is best achieved by harm reduction strategies. We believe the health of ordinary Australian families is being undermined by disproportionate government spending on enforcement rather (75% of expenditure) at the expense of more cost-effective harm reduction strategies. We are concerned with the practical and ethical questions raised by drug use in society.
Description
Drug Policy Australia Limitedis a public health NGO primarily concerned with promoting new approaches to minimise the health risks and other harms caused by the use of drugs which affects the wellbeing of all Australians. We are advocating and promoting a shift in society's prevailing attitude towards drug users that vilifies millions of Australians and costs billions of dollars every year in enforcement, healthcare and forgone tax revenue. Ours is a human rights movement that is a part of the worldwide movement to achieve justice and equality for all regardless of lifestyle choices.
