Building a New Middle Income/Middle Class Population in Atlanta
Atlanta continuously demonstrates its ability to attract world-class venues to
enhance its world-class international status. To build on its prowess, Atlanta must build a middle-income population that strengthens and grows a middle class by implementing community development/economic development activities that focus on upgrading residents of it's inner city communities. To be in line with healthier urban areas, Atlanta needs to add between 55,000 and 70,000 new middle-income residents. McKinley and Company recommended accomplishing this in two ways: "You can attract more people to be residents to the areas who are middle class, or you can grow your existing people to become that middle class/middle income population needed by Atlanta to fill this void". Some members of the Atlanta Renaissance Group made the following comments as the group prepared to go forth to develop a strategy to increase "Atlanta's economic and community development potential: The real mission is to build a middle class city", said James S. Balloun, CEO of National Service Industries, "Not a black city. Not a white city. But a middle income city; G. Joseph Pendergast, Chairman of Wachovia Georgia says, "If community can help graduate Atlanta's large population of poor residents to the rank of middle class, then we can come together to continue to accomplish things across all barriers to make our city even greater and be able to face the 21 st century challenges.
