Do you like meeting new people and socializing one-on-one? Arlington Neighborhood Village provides volunteer support to help older adults in Arlington, Virginia remain in their own homes as they age. We are currently looking for people who would enjoy visiting with members who can’t get out very often. The visits will include conversation, playing games, or sharing other activities that interest the member. In the process, you will form connections with your senior neighbors and reduce their social isolation. Visits will last 1.5 to 2 hours and could be regularly scheduled or occasional events. You will chooses days and times that work for your schedule! Successful volunteers are dependable people who enjoy getting to know others. All volunteers must be 18 or over, and pass a background check. For insurance reasons, we are unable to approve applicants with non-cleared background checks, or those who are seeking court-involved community service hours. Be a volunteer driver and help older adults in Arlington, Virginia get where they need to go - while you make a friendly connection and get to know a neighbor! Arlington Neighborhood Village (ANV) helps seniors continue living in their own homes as they age-safely, independently, and with an enhanced quality of life. Right now, ANV has a pressing need for drivers-our members need transportation to medical appointments, physical therapy, the grocery store, and more. Some of our volunteer drivers are now returning to work schedules with less flexibility during the day to volunteer with us. Our expansion to help at-risk and in-need Arlington seniors, including delivering groceries each week, is also putting pressure on our system. The loss of freedom for those who can no longer drive is more than a hassle-it’s frustrating, sad, and isolating. ANV’s volunteer drivers give older adults the gift of a ride-and connection. They provide a friendly interaction to someone who could really use it. ANV primarily needs drivers with availability weekdays during business hours. Drivers must be 21 and pass a background and driving record check. For insurance reasons, we are unable to accept those with non-cleared background checks, and we are not able to approve volunteers who are seeking court-involved community service hours. Training and support are provided. Learn more about volunteering with ANV at https://anvarlington.org/volunteer/ "I have been a grateful member of ANV for many years. Shortly after I joined, I fell and broke my ankle and could not drive. ANV provided rides to physical therapy several days a week for about a month....they again came to my rescue during the pandemic when I developed problems involving my heart, lungs, and liver. I was provided with rides to medical appointments, sometimes two and three times each week. At a time when I felt alone and stressed, it was truly comforting to have the company of an ANV friend (volunteer)..." --Virginia "I have been volunteering with ANV for more than five years...I know that I’ve received more than I’ve given."

Could you help an older adult with errands, transportation or household tasks? Arlington Neighborhood Village (ANV) relies on volunteers to help seniors age-in-place in Arlington, Virginia. As we age, simple tasks that we once took for granted (getting boxes down from the attic, changing a lightbulb, driving to the grocery store or an unfamiliar location) become more difficult. ANV is part of a nationwide movement to provide support and services to seniors so that they can remain in their homes and community for as long as possible, safely and independently. ANV volunteers drive our members to medical appointments or the grocery store; help with minor household tasks and how to use technology; connect as a walking buddy or friendly visitor; and run errands to local neighborhood locations. Along the way, volunteers provide a friendly social connection to older adults and reduce their isolation. Transportation volunteers are needed during weekday business hours; many other services can be provided on a more flexible schedule. Please visit www.ANVarlington.org to learn more about ANV and to apply to be a volunteer (you must be 18 or over; 21 to serve as a driver). All volunteers supporting members receive training and must pass a background check. For insurance reasons, we are unable to approve applicants with non-cleared background checks, or those who are seeking court-involved community service hours.
