Sutter Hospice in Concord is seeking volunteers (must be at least 18) to visit those patients at the end of their life. Some patients may not have friends or family to visit them during this journey. Volunteering in Hospice is a very rewarding experience. Bringing smiles to patients is sure to bring smiles to you and a satisfaction that you truly are making a difference. To become a hospice volunteer at Sutter Care at Home the greatest gift you can offer is your time, your caring nature, and your willingness to listen. Volunteering can be as simple as sitting by the bedside, reading a book or running a quick errand for our patients and their family member. Training and ongoing support are provided to all volunteers, so experience is not required. Being a hospice volunteer is a great opportunity to practice compassion and discover your skills and learn new ones during the end-of-life care. Volunteers are trained to enhance the overall goal of meeting the physical, emotional, spiritual and practical needs of hospice patients and their families. While volunteer cannot provide clinical or personal care, s/he can be a caring companion and compassionate listener to both patients and families. Hospice of the Valley serves patients in Santa Clara County that live in their home or a nursing facility. The goal of hospice care is to provide comfort care to patients at the end of their life. Volunteer Opportunities for Men & Women There are many volunteer opportunities including relieving a caregiver, socializing with a patient, providing emotional support, playing music, games or running errands, practical assistance, bereavement, and helping in the office. How to get started: The first step to becoming a hospice volunteer is to contact the Volunteer Department. You will be asked to complete an application followed by an interview. You will then take the hospice online volunteer training. After completion of training, you will receive an in-person orientation. Health clearance, vaccinations and a background check are provided through Sutter Health. Our volunteers are required to receive or show verification of an annual flu shot and Tuberculin skin test or blood test, provide immunization records or titers showing immunity to MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and Varicella, show proof of TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis), complete a drug screen and a health screening, consent to a criminal background check, and submit a copy of current driver’s license and auto insurance. Sutter will provide health screening and any necessary tests or vaccinations. Volunteers work closely with Volunteer Program Coordinator as members of the hospice team. You will have great exposure to the career you have chosen. Please note that this position doesn't provide hands on experience with patients. It does allow you to learn bedside manner, see the dying process and gives you exposure to the medical field.
