Spend 60-90 minutes each week assisting a refugee from a war trorn country, or oppressive government, reach their most desired goal- TO BE A US CITIZEN! Volunteers provide individual, in-home (or virtual) English and civics instruction to help adult students navigate the naturalization process. You do NOT have to speak a language other than English or possess prior teaching experience. The legal residents we serve are unable to benefit from classroom instruction and may not be familiar with US customs and laws. Your involvement will enhance their ability to understand and engage with their new community. Your patience and kindness will help develop the communication skills and self-reliance they need to become citizens. Your dedication to their success will forge long lasting memories of appreciation and esteem for Americans. Our Citizenship Educator matches volunteers and students and provides ongoing mentoring and study materials to both throughout the tutoring process. Many of our students come from countries where education, even in their native language, was not an option. Some of these students may require additional instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL). Most of our students reside in various areas of St. Louis City and County. Their ages range from 20-60. Many of our current students are from African and Middle Eastern countries, but we also have students from Latin America, eastern Europe, and Asia. We currently seek volunteers with knowledge of Swahili, Somali, and Bosnian languages. However, you need not speak a foreign language to tutor many of our students.

Our agency offers citizenship assistance to older adult immigrants and refugees. Volunteer tutors are a key component, by providing one to one tutoring in US civics and history, and for the required personal interview (N400), to individuals unable to access or learn in a traditional classroom setting. Student literacy levels vary, with some also needing basic English instruction. Our Citizenship Educator matches tutors with adult students, and mentors them both throughout the process. Group training, printed resource material, and resource links are provided for volunteers. Time commitment is approximately 60-9- minutes weekly, but can exceed that if mutually agreed upon by both volunteer and student. Days and hours are flexible to accommodate scheduling for both individuals. This is an ongoing opportunity with expectation of a minimum 4-6 month commitment. Currently, we seek Swahili and Somali speakers to tutor African refugees with minimal English proficiency. Bosnian, Vietnamese and Chinese speakers also are desired. For other students, volunteers need not know a foreign language. Desired skills/background: Teaching/tutoring, ESL, older adults; immigrants/refugees; mental health. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a significant difference in the life of an individual striving to attain US Citizenship! Prefer individuals with Missouri residency.

Artists, crafters, wellness instructors, musicians/singers needed to help with hands on projects, physical activities (e.g. chair yoga, tai chi, etc.), music programs at our Macklind international Senior Center. Although many of our seniors only speak/understand marginal English, our staff is there to interpret. We need volunteers during weekday hours, either mid/late morning or early afternoon. This can be a one time or occasional commitment, or weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. We are flexible and have a modest budget if special supplies need to be purchased. English language instructors are also needed to develop and lead simple group learning activities. Our center is located near the corner of Macklind and Manchester, near the Science Center. We require some background checks for most senior center volunteers.
