Youth In Action Against Poverty and HIV/AIDS.(YAAPHA) is looking for volunteers to help bring conservation awareness to local communities in Tanzania. This organization is a non profit organization that strives to stop environmental destruction and raise conservation awareness in Tanzanian society. We have limited funding for such activities and welcome volunteers who are willing to help at Urambo District in Tabora Region and Gombe National Park in Kigoma Region. An environmental education volunteer would work together with the organization's Coordinator to develop and implement programs, lectures and seminars geared at raising awareness on environmental conservation issues. These sessions would take place in Urambo District and Kigoma in Tanzania mainland including visits to village communities and schools. Each presentation would be targeted at the conservation issues at that particular location. Presentations at different sites would be both in theory and practice,(whenever possible). For example, schools may require school ground clean-ups, tree planting tasks in the school yards etc. These projects may include a small reward for the student or group of students that accomplish the most in their conservation tasks. Volunteers for this placement should have a keen interest in environmental conservation issues. Enjoy working with large groups of people and school age children. Someone with environmental skills/knowledge would be a bonus but not mandatory. However, volunteers should have the stamina to work outdoors in the Tanzanian climate. Volunteer Tasks Required. Prepare Presentations An environmental education volunteer would first work with the director of the organization to determine which communities most need environmental conservation assistance. Then the volunteer would work on preparing presentations according to the needs of the targeted communities. School Presentations. An environmental education volunteer would work with the coordinator of the organization to develop and implement environmental education presentations and projects for schools requiring conservation knowledge. The organization's staff would first consult personnel in these schools to determine if they are agreeable to such arrangements and if so what school grades would be involved so that the presentations could be directed at the right grade and age level. Organize Prizes for Students. An environmental education volunteer may work with the organization's staff to determine if some type of reward or prize could be given to the student or group of students that accomplish the most success on their assignment. This would encourage the students to learn fast and pay attention during their presentation training. Community Presentations. An environmental education volunteer may be asked to visit rural villages,(with staff members of the organization), especially the villages near park reserves and catchment areas and discuss environmental awareness issues that are pertinent to that location with the people and perhaps some possible approaches to solutions in the problem areas.

Volunteer English teachers are needed at this placement to provide English lessons to children at YAAPHA schools in Moshi and Tabora . Learning how to speak English is a very important skill set for a child in order to obtain many of the more desirable and better paying jobs in future. The children who live at YAAPHA House usually come from very difficult situations and most have experienced quite a bit of tragedy in their young lives. As a result, they are more at risk of having challenges finding employment because they have been marginalized within their community. A volunteer English teacher who is willing to help these children at YAAPHA schools improve their English skills would be helping to increase the chances of the children finding employment in the years to come and consequently a brighter future. Currently there is only 2 teachers at Pasua Nursery School in Moshi and 1 teacher at Urambo Nursery School in In Tabora Region who are able to speak English. This is a challenge for the organization because the children are not being forced to practice their English, therefore their English speaking skills are very limited. A volunteer English teacher would not only give English lessons but would also encourage conversations in English at other times in the house so all could benefit -- an example would be at meal time. Although YAAPHA Schools has only 250 children who studies at our schools but they still require additional assistance in helping to make sure that the school is clean and well kept. There are three mamas that work at the schools who help the children and cook , all doing different tasks. Only one of which is a full-time staff, as the organization can not sustain more than one full-time person. The three mamas that work at YAAPHA schools rotate their work during the day; while one mama is cleaning the another mama is washing clothes and the third is preparing lunch for the children. Volunteer English teachers at this placement would be expected to take part in these chores. The house is big, so it requires work to keep it clean and the children properly cared for Volunteers may be asked to assist with basic childcare needs like: buying groceries at the market or numerous other household chores that would be of great assistance in the house. Activity Description for this project are as follows:- Teach English Most of the English teaching at this placement would be informal. The English practiced would be during games or other after school activities that you had developed. However, for the mamas, structured English lessons during the day would be appreciated. Childcare A volunteer English teacher at YAAPHA House would be asked to assist the mama's with washing the children, washing their clothing, helping them to get ready for classes, as well as assisting at mealtime in both the cooking and feeding of the children. General Household Duties The mama's are incredibly busy, so they appreciate any help they can get from the volunteer English teachers in regards to: the cleaning of the house, tending to the garden as well as helping them fetch supplies from town. Proposal/Grant Research & Writing YAAPHA can always use more assistance; they would appreciate volunteers who are able to research opportunities for them to receive grants and assist them in the writing of these. Updating the information on their website and brochures that are circulated in town would also be of great assistance. Organize Games A volunteer English teacher would be expected to develop and implement games for the children not in school that would teach the English language in a fun and enjoyable manner. These games may involve singing or dancing activities and should encourage the children to interact with each other. The goal is to create a warm and happy learning environment for the children.

Reviews
Would you recommend Youth In Action Against Poverty and HIV/AIDS.(YAAPHA)?
There was always a really good communication structure in the organisation. In Moshi we had a local assistant who was always there for us in case of need and for every questions.
My time in Tanzania was one of the best experience in my life. I got a feel for the real life in Africa and I enjoyed the time. I wished I could have stayed longer.
Thank you very Much the Project Coordinator Peter Bundala and Youth In Action Against Poverty and HIV/AIDS Team.
I've been in Moshi last year and I had the best time ever. I made great friends with the locals and other volunteers of this program and it motivated me to keep doing this kind of work. The faces of the children make it possible to do this work for a longer time. You won't even miss your own home, this will be your new home.
YAAPHA are very well organized, good programs to everyone.
I recommend many volunteers all over the world to work with this organization.
