The U.S. Dream Academy is a local non profit after-school organization located in West Valley City and based out of Maryland. We are dedicated to serving under-supported youth who come from communities impacted by systemic inequities, who may be struggling academically, or who are living in an area with a high crime rate. Our mission is to inspire and invest in the lives of children of incarcerated parents and families in communities harmed by systemic inequities. A Youth Mentor aids in supporting the students in our after-school program. The mentor will assist in our three pillars: Dream, Character and Skill building. The mentor will work closely with the Director and the Mentor Coordinator to develop and oversee our after school program for students. This position is flexible in nature and can be applicable to many majors and specialities. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Passionate about youth development Ability to communicate effectively with both children and adults Basic understanding of Math, Language Arts, and Science Volunteer Requirements Must have personal transportation with a non-suspended driver’s license. Preference for previous experience working with youth Flexible and able to volunteer the agreed upon hours Organized, efficient, and able to successfully function in a school based setting Excellent communication and writing skills. Learning Objectives Understand and implement best practices as they pertain to working with youth. Develop, implement, and execute a successful and engaging program. We are dedicated to serving under-supported youth who come from families living in communities harmed by systemic inequities or who may be struggling academically. Our mission is to inspire and invest in the lives of children of families in communities harmed by systemic inequities. As an Elementary School Youth Mentor, you will play a crucial role in our after-school program by supporting students in our three pillars: Dream, Character, and Skill building. This position is flexible and suitable for volunteers from various backgrounds, cultures, and specialties. Responsibilities: Provide guidance and support to elementary school students Assist students with their homework and academic tasks Engage students in various activities that are valuable to their personal and academic growth, such as arts and crafts, science experiments, reading sessions, and physical activities Foster positive relationships and encourage personal growth Participate in virtual mentoring sessions Work closely with the Director and Mentor Coordinator to create and oversee the after-school program, ensuring it meets the needs of the students Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Passion for youth development and student success Ability to communicate effectively with both children and adults Willingess to enforce holistic approach when supporting students' academic needs Basic understanding of elementary level Math, Language Arts, and Science Volunteer Requirements: Reliable personal transportation with a non-suspended driver’s license Preference for those with previous experience working with youth Flexibility regarding school calendar and student availability Organized, efficient, and able to successfully function in a school based setting or classroom Excellent communication and writing skills Learning Objectives: Understand and implement best practices as they pertain to working with youth Develop, implement, and execute a successful, healthy, consistent, and reliable mentoring relationship with youth Gain a better understanding of the educational and emotional challenges experienced by children impacted by social inequalities. As a Middle School Youth Mentor, you will play a crucial role in our after-school program by focusing on supporting students in our three pillars: Dream, Character, and Skill building. You will work closely with the Director and Mentor Coordinator to promote the student's learning, success. This position is flexible and suitable for students from various majors and specialties. This opportunity is for Fridays only at our middle school partner location in WVC.
