This is a great way to help people experiencing homelessness by creating a bedroll out of recycled materials. We serve a variety of needs, including providing survival supplies for people sleeping outside. These bedrolls provide cushioning between a person and the ground, which is great for someone sleeping outdoors, experiencing housing instability or unsheltered homelessness. It’s also very cheap, ecofriendly, and a great activity to try with friends and family. Tips: If you don’t have at least 500 plastic bags, start a plastic bag drive and collect them from your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers You don’t need to have 500 bags to start making Plarn! You can start a drive and begin learning/making Plarn with the bags you have on hand The bedroll takes time, especially if you're a beginner, so give yourself ample time to learn and crochet If you are experienced, talk to us about crocheting plarn bags and other items! Materials needed 500 - 700 plastic bags Large Crotchet hook Internet (to watch tutorials) How to make plarn (plastic yarn) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQMQH7PoHqU How to make a bedroll using plarn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr_WHW_tGSE Have Questions? Agate Housing and Services helps people experiencing homelessness with the mission of ending homelessness and hunger. The agency addresses a variety of issues surrounding homelessness, and one example is the Representative Payee Program, which currently helps 500 clients manage their finances. Each Payee acts as a receiver for a client’s Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income payments. These services ensure bills are paid, and that spending money is distributed on a routine basis. Social Security mails them correspondence regarding each client at various times of the year. Agate is looking for an Administrative Assistant who can support their department by filing social security letters and client checks. This supports Representative Payees by keeping them organized and increasing their capacity to focus on their highest priorities. The Administrative Assistant would also help other departments with similar work if they were interested. Primary Responsibilities: Helping file all letters received from Social Security Helping file all checks issued to client Helping with other administrative needs Training and Confidentiality: This individual will receive full training and orientation in their specific role, as well as a tour of the facility in which they will be working. They will be informed about our organization, services, and how their commitment impacts our work in the community. The Administrative Assistant can expect to be trainedhow to file correspondence letters and client checks. The Administrative Assistant will be exposed to personal information and will be required to pass a Department of Human Services background check (paid for by Agate). Support and Supervision: The Administrative Assistant’s on-site supervisor will be Kristi Mercer, one of the Representative Payees. The volunteer should direct their questions, comments, and concerns directly to Kristi. If at some point their on-site supervisor is unavailable, the volunteer can also reach out to other staff members within the department, like Anindita. Scheduling: Weekly Flexible on hours Ideally 1-2 days per week Could be monthly with longer hours In-person Location: 2309 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis, MN, 55404 Requirements: Ability to alphabetize letters and file Ability to work independently and with a team Available during weekday office hours (E.g., 9:00AM - 5:00PM) Must pass a Department of Human Services background check (paid for by Agate) Impact: Staff in the Representative Payee department serve around 500 clients and are responsible for keeping track of all client files and information. Their highest priority is serving their clients, who often call frequently or come in during office hours, every day. It can be stressful and difficult to keep a current record of every Social Security correspondence and client’s check, while working directly with clients daily. The Administrative Assistant can help relieve stress by taking on this task of sorting and organizing. Thisfrees upPayees which canimprove the quality of their daily engagements and service delivery. Agate Housing and Services helps people experiencing homelessness, and its mission is to end homelessness and relieve hunger. Some of the people we serve are unsheltered and sleeping outside. We equip them with sleeping mats, bedrolls, and other survival supplies, but these are often limited and costly. Luckily, there is an environmentally friendly way to support these individuals: making plarn bedrolls! Plarn is plastic yarn, which can be crotheted into many things, such as bedrolls. We are looking for aPlarn Crocheter experienced in crocheting (ideally, plarn crocheting) to come on-site to make plarn, use it to make bedrolls, and teach others how to do the same. They would be joined by other volunteers to learn and make a team effort in creating bedrolls, which would help keep our community members off the ground and stay dry. Agate will provide the plastic bags needed for making plarn. Responsibilities: -Use plastic bags to make long strands of plarn -Make bedrolls out of plarn -Teach others how to make plarn and plarn bedrolls Requirements and Commitment: -Experience crocheting plastic or yarn -Comfortable teaching others how to do it -2 hours per week on weekdays Supervision: The Plarn Crocheter would be supervised by the Volunteer Manager, Noah Chan. They will be given a full orientation and onboarding, a tour, and be the on-site contact for day-to-day questions, support, and concerns. Location: 2309 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis, MN, 55404 Impact: The people we serve are unstably housed, and sometimes, they are not able to stay in a shelter. When sleeping outside, the ground can be hard, cold, and wet, which is unsafe and uncomfortable. A bedroll made of crocheted plastic bags is an environmentally friendly way to support these individuals. It provides cushioning against the ground and can keep them dry throughout the night. Plastic bags are not biodegradable, and many Minnesotans have more than they need. This is also a way to keep these plastic bags out of the landfill andreuse them for good.
