Description

The Jacksonville Historical Society was founded in 1929 by local people interested in preserving the city's history for future generations. The small group of 231 members immediately began collecting memorabilia, photographs, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, artifacts, and other items of historical significance . The Society was incorporated as a non-profit corporation November 27th, 1929 and over its first 60 years the Society published numerous booklets and presented many programs; it assisted in research and built its archival collection. It was a tightly knit organization that fostered Jacksonville's history, but with no paid staff or a permanent headquarters, it was truly an activist organization fueled by people that loved history and its preservation. Under the direction of President Jerry Spinks and Executive Director Emily Lisska the organization has grown into an active repository for the city's archives, a publishing house for numerous publications, and the producer of a local television show that enhances the love of Jacksonville, and the South's history.
