The Mission of Art from Ashes is to empower struggling youth by providing creative programs that facilitate health and hope through expression, connection and transformation.
Description
Since its inception in 2003, Art from Ashes (AfA) has provided creative empowerment workshops to high-risk youth, facilitating expression, connection and transformation among the most neglected and vulnerable segments of our community. AfA’s creative programs use the combination of creativity and neurology to provide workshops that not only offer young people access to the arts and to their creative power, but in doing so also address risk factors among struggling young people. Our foundational program, Phoenix Rising, uses poetry and spoken word to empower young people through the language of metaphor. Other programs include Drawing on Air, Casting Shadows and Wingspan. To date, AfA has provided creative workshops with more than 200 partnering organizations for more than 18,000 young people who have survived traumatic events, are victims of abuse, neglect and/or poverty, and are at risk for or engaged in destructive behaviors.

I have been volunteering with Art from Ashes in some capacity since 2013. It is so powerful to be a small part of the facilitation of transformative creative programs to support struggling youth. Ever gotten to see a youth connect with their creative genius? These transformative art, theatre, and poetry programs do just that. There is so much that goes into making them happen. Couldn't think of a better way to support the youth in my home town.

I have been volunteering with this org for almost 5 years! There are so many different ways to contribute depending on what you enjoy and what skills you have. I love working with youth, so my favorite thing is helping facilitate youth workshops. It is an incredible privilege to witness youth sharing their truth. We also organize and participate in fun events; and host youth performances in public to amplify their voices. There are also a lot of critical ways to help if you prefer to work more "behind the scenes." Since we are a small local org, each individual volunteer can have a large impact, and you really feel appreciated!

Starting the volunteer process with Art from Ashes has been nothing short of great! Ever since I sent my first email, I got quick responses and was delighted to meet everyone involved. This established organization is professional, fun, kind, and a whole lot more! Definitely get involved if you can!

I seem to have fallen through the cracks in the system. I'm sure it's an excellent organization, however, unfortunately, I was never contacted back after looking to set a date for volunteering.
