Mission Statement
Pillar Care Continuum is dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and other special needs by supporting personal growth, independence and participation in the community.
Description
Founded in 1953, we deliver life-affirming services to infants, children, adults and their families throughout northern New Jersey. We provide specialized programs to meet a wide range of educational, therapeutic and social needs of people with more than 100 different disabilities/diagnoses. Our programs and services include: Education: At Pillar Elementary School and Pillar High School, both in Livingston, we offer comprehensive educational and therapeutic programs supported by specialized medical services for students ages 3-21 with multiple disabilities. The schools offer an integrated approach to education stressing functional learning. Day Programs : Two day programs in Orange and Wayne serve individuals age 21 and over with developmental disabilities. The programs provide physical, occupational and speech therapy, sensory stimulation, educational, vocational, social, recreational, and community integration opportunities five days per week. Residential Services: Seventeen community residences throughout northern New Jersey provide around-the-clock guidance, supervision and support to adults with developmental disabilities so that they can enjoy the benefits of life in a secure and homelike setting.

At first it was a a little nerve wracking because I was worried about saying and doing the right thing, quickly I began to develop a really wonderful bond with the kids. I also quickly realized how much of an impact I could have on them even with just as much as a quick game of catch or bingo. Not only that, but the kids had a huge impact on me and my outlook on life in general. Some of the kids are nonverbal, but they all had their own forms of communication and learning about them made me much more socially aware. I only volunteered here for a few weeks, but I would definitely say that the experience was a very humbling and rewarding one. I hope to be able to go back as soon as possible!

I have been volunteering for the Hot Wheels wheelchair ballroom dance program at Horizon High School since last fall and have really enjoyed working with these students. They love music and interacting with the volunteers. The staff is always friendly, professional, and enthusiastic, and their volunteer coordinator is super responsive and a constant resource for innumerable opportunities to contribute to this worthwhile organization. It's a pleasure and a privilege to be a part of it.

I have volunteered at various CPNJ centers, and I have only good things to say about CPNJ. This volunteer opportunity has definitely been life changing for me! I have been involved in various projects at CPNJ, and each one is unique and interesting. I would encourage anyone that is interested in volunteering at CPNJ to give it a shot! I guarantee that the experience will be so rewarding (not to mention fun!), you will want to volunteer as much as possible!

I am a student at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ and LOVE CPNJ!
The coordinators at CPNJ are great with helping you find the best site to volunteer! They are always open to new suggestions and love to see you take a leadership role in planning new activities.
I have loved every place I have volunteered at so far (Horizon High, Orange Group Home, Maplewood Group Home, and the Irvington Adult Training Center) and continue to add new sites to my service schedule! The staff are very appreciative of the volunteers and the clients make every day you volunteer worth it! Making them smile is the highlight of my day!
