Description
PURPOSE : To define the role, training,support and responsibilities of Spiritual care Volunteers.
TEXT: 1 Spiritual Care Volunteers provide a supportive presence to patients, family and staff as part of the Spiritual Care team, with a particular emphasis on hospitality and representational witness. They work together with the Director, Education Coordinator and staff chaplains to provide a collaborative approach to spiritual care ministry.
2 Final responsibility for the Spiritual Care Volunteer program is with the Education Coordinator in collaboration with the Director of Spiritual Care. Equally essential to the program are the staff chaplains and office coordinator who also share in the responsibilities.
3 Spiritual Care Volunteers are to be adequately prepared and supported for their ministry. This includes: 3.1 Initial interview 3.2 Training sessions 3.3 Completion of Spiritual Care Volunteer Departmental Orientation 3.4 Monthly education sessions 3.5 Supervision by chaplain mentor4 Spiritual Care Volunteers are assigned to specific units, days and times. Their expected commitment is four hours per week. Day and/or evening coverage is scheduled.
5 Spiritual Care Volunteers are also accountable for the following:
5.1 Documentation of Spiritual Care visits in unit specific notebooks in the Spiritual Care Volunteer office but not in the medical record.
5.2 Completion of sign-in sheet, including number of patients ministered to
5.3 Completion of necessary forms: referrals to staff chaplains; change of religious affiliation; contact with community clergy
5.4 Implementation of responsibilities outlined in "Spiritual Care Volunteer Guidelines" handbook
5.5 Frequent communication with chaplain mentor
6 Spiritual Care Volunteers are to complete Annual Volunteer Update (including TB test).
7 Spiritual Care Volunteers are to complete orientation and on-going competencies with their chaplain mentors.
8 Spiritual Care Volunteers are provided with a complementary meal on their day of service.
9 Spiritual Care Volunteers are to be affirmed and celebrated for their contribution on an on-going basis, with special recognition yearly.
