In the Cascades Region (Oregon and SW Washington), the Red Cross will respond to an average of two home fires per day. To ensure we are supporting our community it is crucial that we have volunteers supporting our efforts by dispatching and coordinating our volunteer teams. This role can be performed from anywhere a volunteer has access to a computer, internet connection, and phone. The Duty Officer is the on-call operations lead for the Cascades Region and ensures a timely and appropriate response to emergencies that occur with the region. The Duty Officer receives the initial request for assistance from first response agencies and individuals that have experienced a disaster; coordinates the mobilization and deployment of initial responders to the disaster scene; and provides ongoing technical assistance and deployment of additional support resources as needed. Job Duties: Receive and screen calls, evaluate response needs, and deploy appropriate Red Cross responders Provide technical support for responders including: Performing an initial assessment and verification of the disaster Serving as a liaison between the Disaster Action Team (DAT) responders and other support teams Providing guidance to DAT about questions related to specific assistance that may be provided to clients Identifying temporary lodging for disaster clients. Initiating a case in the Client Assistance System (CAS 2.0) Maintains regular communication with deployed responders Accurately completes incident reporting and sends out response notifications using regional systems in a timely manner. Contacting the Manager On Call for technical assistance and guidance for incidents that are non-routine or may trigger an extended need for service delivery (i.e. opening a congregate shelter or service center) Qualifications: Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Strong written, listening, and verbal communication skills. Ability to learn and implement Red Cross service delivery policies, procedures, and services. Ability to work effectively as part of the team. Ability to adapt to change, negotiate compromise, seek clarity, be flexible, and manage ambiguity. Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously. Ability to work for extended periods of time under stressful conditions. Ability to effectively work with diverse cultures including their own and others. Ability to use basic computer programs (Word, Excel), email, Exchange. Ability to treat clients and workforce with patience and compassion. Detail oriented Values diversity Ability to give and take performance-related feedback Self-awareness about one’s knowledge and has the ability to seek assistance Knowledge about the designated chain of command and Incident Command System Time Commitment: Minimum two, six-hour shifts per month for a period of at least one year. The Red Cross responds to an average of two home fires per day in Oregon and SW Washington. To better prepare our communities, the Disaster Cycle Services program at the Red Cross started the Home Fire Campaign in 2014. The goal of the program was to reduce injuries and fatalities caused by home fires by offering free smoke alarm installations and disaster preparedness education to households nationwide. The Home Fire Campaign Coordinator will play a crucial role in organizing the people and logistics of fulfilling community requests to the Home Fire Campaign. Working in tandem with the Preparedness Manager, the Home Fire Campaign Coordinator will gain a better understanding of Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services and experience in Program Management, Volunteer Engagement and Training Facilitation, and Community Outreach strategies. Key Responsibilities: * Coordinate requests coming from email and phone, set up installation appointments with households, populating a spreadsheet of pending and completed appointments. * Support the onboarding, coordination and engagement of volunteer teams to fill appointment requests. * Assist in training new volunteers. * Support weekend event logistics for large scale campaigns, generally once per month. * Additional opportunities for Community Outreach available to raise public awareness of the Home Fire Campaign services. Desired Qualifications: * Ability to manage multiple tasks independently. * Comfort with public speaking. * Interest in training facilitation. * Passion in community outreach and volunteer engagement. * Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs: Excel, Powerpoint, MS Teams. Time Commitment: * Flexible schedule of 5-10 hours per week; generally one Saturday event per month. * 6 month commitment, with ability to extend. Location: * Role will be based out of the Portland Red Cross Office (3131 N. Vancouver Ave, Portland, OR 97217), but has opportunities for remote support after training. The Home Fire Campaign Coordinator will help grow the outreach of the Home Fire Campaign by increasing volunteer engagement and direct service to the community.

Are you passionate about working with Elementary aged students? Do you want a volunteer role that will have a lasting impact, educating our future leaders to help prepare and cope with potential disasters. In just an hour presentation, Red Cross Volunteer Presenters can help students start conversations with their families about making plans for disasters in their homes. The Pillowcase Project is a national youth preparedness program offered by Red Cross regions across the country. The 40- or 60-minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school classrooms and other settings. All training will be provided to volunteers, and can be done remotely. No previous disaster preparedness experience is needed. There are options for in-person or virtual volunteer presenters, although In-Person presenters are in higher demand (must have COVID-19 vaccination). Role Requirements: Comfortable presenting an interactive curriculum to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school and out of school/community settings Strong organizational skills and ability to follow through with minimum supervision Excellent communication skills, including public speaking Dynamic personality that relates well to youth in the target age group Reliable, punctual, good time management skills Ability to complete reports and conduct follow up calls with sites in a timely manner Ability to problem solve and be flexible with program changes, regional changes, etc. Daytime and/or weekend availability Ability to arrange transportation to the Red Cross office to pick up materials, travel to event location, and return materials, etc. to the office at the end of the presentation Must be able to meet all background check requirements imposed by the Red Cross and any imposed by local school jurisdictions COVID-19 Vaccination Required for In-Person Instructors
