P urpose A Community Volunteer Leader (CVL) is a leadership volunteer who works in partnership with the Executive Director (or Regional Executive) with the primary goal of building capacity to deliver the local Red Cross mission. The CVL extends the reach of the Executive Director by serving as the face of Red Cross in a geographic location. R oles and Responsibilities Partnering with the Executive Director (or Regional Executive), the CVL works to enhance community presence and cultivating and stewarding key relationships that expand the Red Cross mission. This may be accomplished through one or more of the following activities: Participating in local community events as an extension of the Executive Director or Regional Executive. Building, regaining and/or enhancing the Red Cross presence in the local community by sharing information and bringing relationships and resources to the Red Cross. Cultivating and stewarding external relationships (elected officials, local service clubs, partners and other key stakeholders) that expand the Red Cross mission. Serving as an advocate, representing Red Cross volunteer needs within a specific community. Sharing needs for volunteers with social networks & circles of influence. Maintaining a general working knowledge of all Red Cross services and critical needs. In chapters where Red Cross collects blood, the CVL Represents the Red Cross blood donation needs within a specific community. Shares the need for blood donations with social networks & circles of influence. Ensures blood drive sponsors are representative of the local community and fill specific needs identified by the region. Asks blood drive sponsors to meet blood drive objectives, increase the productivity of blood drives and help to recruit donors to blood drives. Asks new sponsors to participate in the blood donation program to meet the strategic needs of the region. Qualifications Passion for the Red Cross mission and the community Demonstrated interest in promoting Red Cross opportunities and mission (to include biomedical services in markets with blood). A natural 'connector’; able to connect the community needs with American Red Cross Able to be sensitive to others and personally work well in stressful situations with a wide variety of people A creative self-starter who can successfully manage multiple tasks and priorities Embraces diversity and inclusion and demonstrates understanding of the mission, vision, and seven fundamental principles. Leads by example and demonstrates Red Cross value Ability to work in a variety of roles, including those of consultant, collaborator, and administraton. Learn More The Executive Director/Regional Executive in coordination with appropriate Red Cross staff will provide appropriate Red Cross training, resources, and internal connections. The Red Cross responds to an average of two home fires per day in Oregon and SW Washington. To better prepare our communities, the Disaster Cycle Services program at the Red Cross started the Home Fire Campaign in 2014. The goal of the program was to reduce injuries and fatalities caused by home fires by offering free smoke alarm installations and disaster preparedness education to households nationwide. The Home Fire Campaign Coordinator will play a crucial role in organizing the people and logistics of fulfilling community requests to the Home Fire Campaign. Working in tandem with the Preparedness Manager, the Home Fire Campaign Coordinator will gain a better understanding of Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services and experience in Program Management, Volunteer Engagement and Training Facilitation, and Community Outreach strategies. Key Responsibilities: * Coordinate requests coming from email and phone, set up installation appointments with households, populating a spreadsheet of pending and completed appointments. * Support the onboarding, coordination and engagement of volunteer teams to fill appointment requests. * Assist in training new volunteers. * Support weekend event logistics for large scale campaigns, generally once per month. * Additional opportunities for Community Outreach available to raise public awareness of the Home Fire Campaign services. Desired Qualifications: * Ability to manage multiple tasks independently. * Comfort with public speaking. * Interest in training facilitation. * Passion in community outreach and volunteer engagement. * Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs: Excel, Powerpoint, MS Teams. Time Commitment: * Flexible schedule of 5-10 hours per week; generally one Saturday event per month. * 6 month commitment, with ability to extend. Location: * Role will be based out of the Portland Red Cross Office (3131 N. Vancouver Ave, Portland, OR 97217), but has opportunities for remote support after training. The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The Home Fire Campaign Coordinator will help grow the outreach of the Home Fire Campaign by increasing volunteer engagement and direct service to the community.

In just an hour presentation, Red Cross Volunteer Presenters can help students start conversations with their families about making plans for disasters in their homes. The Pillowcase Project is a national youth preparedness program offered by Red Cross regions across the country. The 40- or 60-minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school classrooms and other settings. All training will be provided to volunteers, and can be done remotely. No previous disaster preparedness experience is needed. There are options for in-person or virtual volunteer presenters, although In-Person presenters are in higher demand (must have COVID-19 vaccination). Role Requirements: Comfortable presenting an interactive curriculum to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school and out of school/community settings Strong organizational skills and ability to follow through with minimum supervision Excellent communication skills, including public speaking Dynamic personality that relates well to youth in the target age group Reliable, punctual, good time management skills Ability to complete reports and conduct follow up calls with sites in a timely manner Ability to problem solve and be flexible with program changes, regional changes, etc. Daytime and/or weekend availability Ability to arrange transportation to the Red Cross office to pick up materials, travel to event location, and return materials, etc. to the office at the end of the presentation Must be able to meet all background check requirements imposed by the Red Cross and any imposed by local school jurisdictions COVID-19 Vaccination Required for In-Person Instructors
