Mission Statement

Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact.

Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches caring adults with children for one hour each week in school. They read together, play board games or just talk. Children benefit; adults feel like a kid again.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides opportunities for volunteers of all ages to be friends to children who need extra time and attention to succeed in school and with family and peers. Volunteers are needed to be school-based mentors to children whose teachers have referred them for individualized one-on-one concentrated time. Typically, an hour each week talking about what is on the child's mind, reading the newspaper together or puzzling over a class assignment, has a positive impact on the child's attitude about school and academic achievement, while putting a little fun and extra meaning into the volunteer's day and week. Volunteers are also needed for our Community Based program requiring one hour per week commitment to the child. Activities can include: riding bicycles, walking, going to a movie, running errands, or just hanging out. Volunteers enroll through Big Brothers Big Sisters and following an interview, references and a background check, are oriented to their program and introduced to a little brother or little sister by BBBS staff. Regular support is available to assure that the relationship builds over time, and any logistical problems are resolved. Teachers report that children with Bigs have an improved attitude about school, better relationships with peer and adults, and improved academic performance.

Because I was in the big brothers and little brothers system. In 89 system while my parent's were divorced. So I no what kind of thing's. They are going through. I have a great personality and work well with other's. I have a great military background. Working with other's don't matter what race .

I am currently the AmeriCorps member at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jackson County, which is like the domesticated Peace Corps, I volunteered to commit one year to serve my community. I am in charge of the Learn and Serve Teen Mentoring here at BBBS. If you've ever thought you were too young to make a difference, I can tell you this is farthest from the truth. I am so inspired by the teens in our community stepping up and being a friend to a child. Seeing that child's smiling face every week is just one of the ways I know these teens are truly making a difference! BBBS Staff are committed to child safety all Bigs, even teens, submit to a background check. At the same time staff are committed to supporting Bigs in any concerns they might have. We are consistently providing free or low cost activities to our matches, which are supported by generous donations from our great community! What a great organization making a real difference in the lives of Jackson County youth!
