Think about the person in your childhood who shared new experiences and ideas with you. Regardless of who that person was, they introduced some magic into your world and your eyes opened like wildflowers! Big Brother and Big Sister volunteer mentors do just that --- they turn little bits of magic into big moments in a child's life. Carefully screened Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers are matched with children based on similar interests and hobbies. Volunteer Opportunities Our community based program offers volunteers the opportunity to meet with their Little Brothers and Little Sisters on their own schedule and participate in activities throughout the community. Volunteers in the program spend an average of eight hours a month with their Little Brother or Little Sister. Our site-based programs allow the volunteer to meet with their Little Brother or Little Sister at a designated site or school location for one hour a week. The site-based programs are located in Indio, Coachella, La Quinta, Mecca and Cathedral City. Please provide your cell phone # and email address. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides opportunities for volunteers of all ages to be friends to children who need extra time and attention to succeed in school and with family and peers. Volunteers 50 and older are needed to be mentors to children whose teachers have referred them for individualized one-on-one concentrated time. Typically, an hour each week talking about what is on the child's mind, reading the newspaper together or puzzling over a class assignment, has a positive impact on the child's attitude about school and academic achievement, while putting a little fun and extra meaning into the volunteer's day and week. Volunteers enroll through Big Brothers Big Sisters and following an interview, references and a background check and introduced to a little brother or little sister by BBBS staff. Regular support is available to assure that the relationship builds over time, and any logistical problems are resolved. Children with Bigs have an improved attitude about school, better relationships with peer and adults, and improved academic performance. Following an orientation and screening, you will meet on a consistent basis with one child. BBBS staff will introduce you to your Little and provide advice and support to ensure that the relationship takes off. Ongoing staff support is available.
