Mission Statement
Every day, an alarming amount of edible food is wasted in the U.S (an estimated 30-50%!). At the same time there is a significant population that lack access to fresh fruits and vegetables that are often not available in traditional food bank models . Additionally there are populations that have difficulty accessing food pantries due to location, stigma, and other barriers. Denver Food Rescue (DFR) uses the sustainable method of bicycle power and an amazing volunteer crew to save good produce from grocery stores, farmers markets, and distributors that would otherwise be thrown away. We then redistribute it to directly to organizations that work with food insecure communities. Better yet, the programs are managed by the communities and residents themselves!
Description
Want to help reduce food waste and increase food security in Denver while riding your bike (or car)? Volunteers are at the heart of our work picking up beautiful, edible whole fruits & veggies that would otherwise be discarded from food vendors across the city and delivering it to neighborhoods that have less access to fresh healthful foods. Our hyper-direct re-distribution model allows us to rescue more produce plus we utilize bike-power to keep our financial and environmental costs down. Plus bikes are more fun! Last year our volunteers saved over 8 tons of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere while riding for DFR!
