SUPPORT GROUP FACILITATORS Support Group Facilitators create a safe, open environment where people share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia. KEY ACTIVITIES: Facilitate groups of caregivers or people living with dementia to provide social and educational support helping group members provide emotional support to one another. Present pertinent Association materials and information to group members and assure a positive experience for attendees. Connect people with additional Association services and volunteer opportunities by proactively making referrals to Alzheimer's Association programs & free 24/7 Helpline. QUALIFICATIONS: Strong listening and effective communication skills with demonstrated ability to be empathetic and separate personal needs from group needs. Ability to redirect and facilitate discussion as well as fulfill the Facilitator duties and responsibilities as described in on boarding. Ability to create and maintain a safe environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued and group members are treated with fairness, equity and respect. Passionate about the Alzheimer’s Association mission with personal or professional experience with dementia preferred. Must be age 21 to apply. Background checks are required. COMMITMENT EXPECTED: Support Group Facilitators commit to a 1-year term delivering a monthly group. All program volunteers participate in initial training and ongoing education and must comply with Alzheimer’s Association volunteer policies and procedures. Terms are renewable upon successful completion of annual goal-setting conversation with your staff partner. The LGBTQ+ community may face particular challenges related to Alzheimer's and dementia. These include finding inclusive and welcoming health care providers, less ability to call upon adult children for assistance, concerns about stigma and higher rates of poverty and social isolation. An Alzheimer’s Association support group is an open gathering of people with common problems, needs and interests who come together to share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia in a safe environment. The goal of the Alzheimer’s Association support groups is to provide emotional, social and/or educational support to group members. Qualifications of a Support Group Facilitator: Experience with dementia as a family member or health care professional preferred. Ability to be empathic and separate personal needs from group needs. Strong listening skills and effective communication skills. Ability to redirect and facilitate discussion as well as fulfill the duties and responsibilities as described in the Facilitator Agreement. Ability to create and maintain a safe environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued and group members are treated with fairness, equity and respect. Commitment to promote the mission and services of the Association and willingness to act as an extension of the Association and to put other responsibilities and obligations aside when acting in this role. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Follow expectations and recommendations of the Caregiver Support Group Facilitator Manual, including participation in initial training, record keeping, and regular check ins with Association staff. Arrange for speakers/presenters for the group as needed. Encourage participants to provide assistance and emotional support to one another. Present pertinent Association materials and information to group members. Inform the Alzheimer’s Association in advance of any changes in group facilitators, time or location of group meetings. Alzheimer’s Association regularly attends community events and health fairs to help provide the public with accurate information about the disease and the services provided by the Association. Ideal candidates are outgoing, friendly, and comfortable speaking with all members of the general public.
