Institute is ran by compassion and purpose. I love it. I wish I had more time available in the week to volunteer there

None of the people I know do volunteer work, so I'm never in the position for people to recommend this place , or any other place to me.

I have been legally blind in my left eye (AMD) since 1988. I developed a puckered preretinal membrane in my right eye early in 2003 & was legally blind in that eye also for two years. During that period, I attended meetings at the L.A. Braille Institute, bought items from the store, and received valuable help and encouragement from the organization. Among things that impressed & inspired me during my visits WERE displays of work, including art & photos, by others with impaired vision. I had been a writer, photographer & photojournalist for decades, and had begun to work with computer graphics during the mid-1980s while a supervisor in the Art Department at Hughes Aircraft Co. Seeing the often-impressive work of others helped inspire me to continue with my photography - and to delve even further into creation of digital abstract art, using a large monitor, various magnifying devices (which I learned about from the Institute) and very strong reading glasses.
