We are a completely humanitarian, non-denominational, registered nonprofit with one simple motive-to provide opportunities to the vulnerable children and families living in Nkoaranga. Volunteering with TST will mean that you are part of a dedicated global network of people who truly want to make a difference! Childcare volunteers now have a minimum stay of four weeks, as it is too tough for the kids if there are many people in and out, building intense relations with them. Volunteers play an important role in education and have the opportunity to learn about the culture in Tanzania, international child welfare + education, and collaborate with and for community members and their families. If you are looking to learn and have an open mind, while still making an impact, this is the opportunity for you. Highlights: Developing engaging activities/creative programs for the children including art, music, yoga, science experiments, day trips, etc. Unique opportunity to volunteer ethically and make a real impact with a small, grassroots organization that is jointly Tanzanian and American run, focused on family preservation and community development! Stay a minimum of four weeks, but come any time of the year! Responsibilities + Opportunities: Assist in teaching on weekend community tutoring programs Participate in afterschool sessions and reading programs Help out in the daycare to teach English to and play with children ages 3-6 Creating new activities for kids to learn in both the daycare and with community outreach kids Teaching computer and English classes to community members and students Engaging with and empowering social enterprise students Expectations, Required Skills, + Experience: Commit 35 hours a week to volunteer in and learning within The Small Things programs Experience working with children in some capacity; must have a passion for working with children Interest in learning from a small grassroots organization and the communities and people it supports. We integrate a comprehensive family preservation program with high-quality, loving, community-based residential care. That means keeping children in homes where they belong, caring for them when their families can’t, and doing all that we can to reunify children in our care with relatives. We are also managing the Families and Futures Coalition of Tanzania (FFCT)- a coalition of organisations working together in order to help grassroots organisations improve their quality of care and move toward family-first models. TST invites interested volunteers from all over the world to come and see our impact first-hand. We work closely with the local community to create high-impact, ethical volunteer opportunities for those interested in affecting sustainable and long-lasting change. In order to best support the attachment needs of our children, volunteers must commit to a minimum of two months to be considered for this program. Please note that in order to preserve healthy attachments, in most cases, contact with our residential children will be limited. FFCT is a project of The Small Things - a US-based, registered nonprofit working on the ground in Tanzania - and is a coalition of organisations working together to share resources in order to keep families together and transform the quality of care for vulnerable children in Tanzania. FFCT invites skilled volunteers from all over the world to come and see our impact first-hand while volunteering with our After School Enrichment Program. This program aims to provide on-site extension and enrichment education opportunities for students after school. Skills that we are looking for in particular include: STEM (STEAM) The Arts (singing, skill with a musical instrument, dancing) Languages (German, French, Italian, Spanish, Sign Language) Martial Arts (kickboxing, taekwondo) Technology/Coding Vocational Skills - cooking, sewing, carpentry, pottery Gardening If you have a specific area of expertise or interest that isn't listed, please get in touch as we may be able to customise a volunteer role to suit. In order to best support the needs of the students at Silverleaf Academy, volunteers must commit to a minimum of four weeks to be considered for this program. We provide for you: Pre-departure support, airport pick-up and drop off Free weekly Swahili classes Orientation 24/7 in-country support Meals and housekeeping Free social impact tour *Excellent activity add-ons are also available, including safaris, many more social impact tours, and a Maasai village tour. Overview: The international education internship at TST is an excellent way for people who are interested in international education systems to get first-hand experience. During your time and internship with us at TST, you will be given the opportunity to really delve into and learn about how the Tanzanian education system works. This is a collaborative, cross-cultural learning and interning experience, where interns are given the space to learn from and share their ideas with Tanzanian and international educators. opportunity to engage with education systems, educators, and community members expected to respect and seek to understand the culture as well as respect fundamental rights, dignity, and worth of all people as equal. This internship will give you invaluable experience to propel you forward in an education-focused career, while at the same time getting to live in Tanzania, within the culture, learning the language, and gaining many new experiences. Who we are looking for: Currently pursuing a degree in education or related field, or an individual who has completed their schooling. A flexible personality that is able to handle cultural differences and changes in schedule Self-starter that is capable of working independently Willing to learn Swahili, as it is essential for understanding Tanzanian culture and systems Experience working with children in some capacity; must have a passion for working with children Interest in learning from a small grassroots organization and the communities and people it supports. Responsibilities + Opportunities: Help run our weekly tutoring program that caters to over 100 students from the surrounding villages and communities Work closely with Tanzanian and international education specialists to develop supplementary education for our residential kids Create and assist in running a variety of adult education workshops Teach English to children, outreach families, students from the community, and other professionals Participate in business classes within our outreach program You will spend time at the daycare within our preschool and pre-primary classes for youth aged 3-6, teaching and leading activities. Opportunity to work closely and learn from Tanzanian student teachers, who are spending a year at TST to gain experience before university. Practice Swahili with them and learn from each other about different educational systems, resulting in a collaborative cross-cultural education project/program. The real in-time classroom experience Visits to our partner schools, local universities, and multiple other organizations within the area. Educations Interns will be best suited for the summer months May-August, or for one long semester.
