Therapy dogs visits are an excellent way to connect with some of Allay's hospice patients. They have a special way of showing unconditional love & affection that can lift one's spirit no matter the circumstances. They bring joy by encouraging social interaction and they can be a remarkable source of comfort and companionship, as well as a welcome distraction from the daily routine for both hospice patients and their families. While many animals provide love and companionship in the home, not all of them have the temperament suited for this type of service. At this time we require that all Therapy Dog Teams must complete training & assessment through a recognized Animal-Assisted Therapy program before visiting hospice patients. (The human-half of the team will also receive additional training related to hospice visitation.) If your pet is already certified as a therapy dog, Congratulations! You are already well on your way to joining Allay’s Therapy Dog Team. If your pet has not been through the certification process, we can help you to get started. Contact Tracy Seeg, Volunteer Coordinator, for more info: 262-333-1866 or tseeg@allayhh.com Volunteer and patient safety are our top priority. We follow CDC guidelines & respect the Covid-19 protocols of our partner facilities. At this time, we ask volunteers to complete a self-screening checklist prior to visits, wear a mask during visits and, of course, adhere to standard precautions, such as frequent handwashing. Allay will provide the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure safe practices can be followed.

The purpose of our Vigil Program is to support fragile patients who may be alone during their final days or hours. The emphasis is on bringing a sense of peace and calm to the patient at this time. Volunteers create a serene environment by reading a comforting prayer or poem, listening to soothing music or just sitting quietly holding a patient's hand. Simply being present with the patient is the main focus at this time. Vigil volunteers are most often requested for those who are likely to be alone: however, volunteers may also be asked to support family members who need to take a break from the bedside of their loved one or the emotional support of a caring person. Since the vigil program is an "on-call" type of opportunity, we do take into account the volunteer's personal schedule and location when attempting to fill a vigil request. Volunteers receive training in the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, and helpful skills for meaningful visits with hospice patients and their families. Additional training specifically related to the vigil visit is provided.

Allay's Compassionate Companions bring comfort to our patients and relief for their caregivers by offering a supportive presence, a listening ear and a helping hand. When visiting, volunteers may offer to play music or a game, read to the patient, listen to his/her stories and memories, sit with a patient outside or take him/her for a walk, or offer assistance with non-medical tasks. There are also times when volunteers may simply sit quietly while holding one's hand, letting the patient know that he or she is not alone. It's just having that connection to another person, no matter how simple, that can have a positive effect on one's quality of life. The amount of time you give is flexible and scheduled around your availability. We do take into account your location to assign patient visits that are within or near your own community. Hospice Companions receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills for meaningful visits with hospice patients and their families.
