Mission Statement

The Historic Jamestown Society endeavors to interpret and preserve the rich heritage of Jamestown and the surrounding communities of Guilford County by inviting its neighbors and guests to explore and share the significant stories, experiences, and material culture of the past and its relevance to justice, peace and understanding in the present.

Description

Mendenhall Plantation (aka, Mendenhall Homeplace), the primary holding of HJS, is a historic Quaker homeplace that serves as the interpretive center of the "other south..." the south of peace loving people who actively opposed slavery and supported universal education.

The site is home to several early 19th century structures: the Mendenhall house, spring house, a Pennsylvania style bank barn, one-room school house, tan shop, and one of the state's first medical school. Richard's original tanning table is also on display at the former site of his tanyard.
