New volunteer training uses lecture, real life stories and small group exercises so you will learn how to provide practical help and emotional support to those with life limiting illnesses and their loved ones. At the end of this comprehensive training, you will receive a certificate and become part of a very special care team - ordinary people making an extraordinary difference! We need volunteers in a number of areas, including: Patient companionship and family support- this takes place in people's homes, as well as nursing homes. Can also include volunteers with specialized, licensed skills, such as Pet Therapy, Reiki, Massage Therapy, Hair Stylist, etc. Veteran to Veteran visits - also in people’s homes, as well as nursing homes. MVH Singers- a trained group of volunteers who sing softly at patients' bedside. Bereavement support. Keepsake Program- Share your creative side! We need volunteers who can sew, use clothing from someone who has passed and make keepsake teddy bears or pillows from the material. Very popular with loved ones. Volunteers who visit with patients and families must complete a volunteer training. We also ask that people are not actively grieving a loss. Our Malden office covers patients in the following areas: Malden, Melrose, Everett, Revere, Chelsea, Medford, Arlington, Somerville, Stoneham, Winchester, Cambridge, East Boston, Winthrop, Salem, Marblehead, Swampscott, Lynn, Saugus, Wakefield, Peabody, Lynnfield, Reading, North Reading, Wilmington, Burlington and Woburn.

JOB SUMMARY: The Greeter welcomes and assists patients, their families and visitors entering the Hospice House. Volunteers working in this capacity answer questions, provide information and direct people to the Hospice location they need, thus creating an atmosphere in the house that is caring, yet efficient. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Mature, dependable and caring individual who has the ability to communicate courteously and effectively with patients, families, visitors and staff. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of patient information. Greeters must be able to stand/walk for a three to four hours shift. DUTIES: Cordially greets visitors and patients upon arrival. Ascertains patients’ and or visitors’ needs and directs them accordingly. Provides assistance to patients and visitors by obtaining wheelchairs, or other services as needed. Escorts patients’ families who need help to their destination within the Hospice House. Contacts Nursing, Security, Facilities Management, for assistance when necessary. Monitors the overall appearance of the Hospice House’s entrance. Performs related duties as required

Patient and Family Volunteers- Our volunteers have a huge impact on the lives of the families that we serve! They make visits in the home, spend much needed one on one time with siblings and patients, and develop relationships that last a lifetime. The families we serve have a child that has a life limiting illness. Opportunities include: Mentorship - Spend time with siblings of a patient. Do art projects, help with homework, play! Support for parents: Help go through the mail, spend time with the children to give mom or dad a break. Major skills needed: compassion, playfulness, flexibility.
