Mission Statement

The mission of the National Down Syndrome Society is to be the leading human rights organization for all individuals with Down syndrome..

Description

The National Down Syndrome Society envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations and become valued members of welcoming communities. NDSS is committed to being the national leader in enhancing the quality of life and realizing the potential of all people with Down syndrome. Founded in 1979, NDSS has grown into the largest non-governmental supporter of research, education and advocacy.

NDSS works to increase public awareness about Down syndrome, to assist families in addressing the needs of children born with this genetic condition and to sponsor and encourage research. We work with our affiliate groups across the country to dispel the myths associated with Down syndrome , while helping people with Down syndrome achieve their full potential in community life. NDSS develops and disseminates timely and informative materials; encourages the activities of local parent support groups; sponsors regional and national conferences and scientific symposia and undertakes major advocacy efforts - all to increase awareness and acceptance of people with Down syndrome.
