Mission Statement
Connecticut legal Services is a private, not-for-profit law firm dedicated to improving the lives of low-income people by providing access to justice.
Description
CLS provides free civil legal services to low-income people.CLS represents, advises, and educates low-income individuals and families in matters relating to civil law, thereby helping them secure the protection, privileges, benefits, rights, and opportunities that this law provides.
CLS serves very low-income families and individuals - those whose incomes fall near or below the federal poverty line. Because these hundreds of thousands of people in our area have so many more legal problems than we can address, we screen applicants to ensure that we are providing legal help to those in the most urgent need, who are least able to manage without a lawyer, and on whose behalf we can be most effective. Many of our clients must cope with disabilities; many have limited English proficiency; many have limited education. We represent clients of all races and ages.
Our areas of concentration include housing, children’s and education law, wage and hour law, family/domestic violence law, public benefits law (including medical access), disability law, and elder law.
History: CLS provides free civil legal services to low-income people in 122 Connecticut communities. Founded in 1977, we have six full-service offices (including our Bridgeport and Stamford offices) and five satellite offices (including South Norwalk). CLS covers all of Connecticut except for areas of Hartford and New Haven counties.
