Mission Statement

The mission of the VMSRAMRH (Vickery Meadow Summer Reading Academy/McShan Reading Homeroom) is to include the students of Vickery Meadow who would not read/write or hear/speak English all summer; provide food, socialization and exercise for those who would not eat well, or even leave the apartment because parents work and are afraid to let them play outside; tutor students so that they are better prepared and inspired to enter school in the Fall after four weeks of the Academy. McShan Reading Homeroom began as an off-shoot of VMSRA in 2015, and is now in full operation throughout the school year, focusing on basic English, reading, writing, and reading comprehension.

The group of volunteers mostly consists of very sweet retired teachers and older college-aged teens that help elementary kids needing extra guidance in reading and writing. There is very kind atmosphere that helps you develop as a volunteer and by the end you'll grow fond of every child in the program.
