Mission Statement

Neighbor Ride enhances the health and quality of life for Howard County's seniors by providing the comfort and peace of mind of affordable, passenger-focused transportation services through a reliable, volunteer-based system. Since 2004, Neighbor Ride has leveraged the power of volunteers to coordinate and provide over 230,000 trips for older adults, age 60 and over - giving them the "wheels" they need to stay healthy and remain actively engaged in the life of our community. The cost of transportation is subsidized for all those Neighbor Ride serves, with modest fees charged for those who can afford to pay. Through the organization's Good Neighbor Fund and Driving Heroes Program, low-income seniors and Veterans receive transportation at no cost to them.

Description

Neighbor Ride is a volunteer-based transportation service committed to decreasing isolation and improving the quality of life for Howard County’s older residents. Voted Best of Howard County - Charity/Nonprofit, Neighbor Ride and its dedicated volunteers help seniors remain active and independent by providing rides for medical appointments, shopping, social outings, fitness classes, personal care and business appointments, religious services, volunteer commitments and other day-to-day activities.

Neighbor Ride is such a worthwhile nonprofit and it is well run! Our seniors love this service that we provide. I am a Ride Coordinator and enjoy my telephone contact with our passengers as well as the drivers. My husband is one of our drivers as well. I have volunteered there for over a year.

Volunteering for NeighborRide is VERY "schedule friendly". You select the dates and times that match client needs with your availability. I have met some great folks in the process and I know they appreciate what we do for them. As a person nearing 50 myself, I'm glad to know this kind of service is available. I am now in 'pay-it-forward' mode and hope that when I need this kind of help in the future, someone else is willing to step up. I have the belief that it will.

Meeting and assisting the clients of NeighborRide has been a joy during the 9 months I have been a driver. I am meeting individuals who have led interesting, and in some cases, absolutely amazing lives, and who appreciate this way of maintaining their own lives when age or illness has taken their ability to drive themselves. I look forward to additional time with my clients during future appointments. Scheduling is very easy and allows me to maintain my personal life in retirement by accepting rides that fill my free time. I have a friend who says the same thing and she is still working.

I enjoy the opportunity to provide rides to seniors. I have met many wonderful people - riders, other drivers, and the people who run the Neighbor Ride office. It truly is a service that helps seniors stay active in the community. I am very glad to be a part of it.

This has been a wonderful experience and I enjoy every time I provide a ride for someone. Not only am I helping someone, but I am also rewarded by meeting all the riders and speaking with them and listening to their stories.

I'm a volunteer driver who has met many wonderful people through this service. All who use it would not be able to be independent without this volunteer service.
