Delivery volunteers are our FAVORITE volunteers! This is great for people who want to have direct interaction with the clients that Open Hand serves. Volunteers will use their own vehicle and gas to deliver meals to our chronically and terminally ill clients as well as homebound senior citizens in the metro Atlanta area. Please watch both videos to fully prepare for your delivery experience: https://tinyurl.com/Delivery-Orientation-2020 https://tinyurl.com/WorkWave-Orientation-2020 The average route is between 1.5-3 hours. If you are able to take a longer route, please let us know by texting 678-306-6649. All meals are delivered in the morning (no afternoon or evening routes). We provide a thorough, 30 minute new driver training on the date of your first delivery. (Download our Delivery App, available for both iPhone and Android): WorkWave Route Manager prior to arriving for your shift to prepare for orientation.) Please note: This opportunity is available only Monday thru Friday as we are closed on the weekends. Drivers must be 21 years or older, have a valid license and vehicle liability insurance, and must also be cleared via an MVR. There is no age limit for passengers. While making deliveries, volunteers are asked to "Drop.Wait.Wave." When you arrive to your client’s home, give them a call to confirm they are there. If they do not pick up, knock on their door, drop the box down, and take a few steps back and wait a few minutes to confirm they are home to receive their meal. *Note* some of our clients need a little extra help, and may ask that you put their box on their table. We ask that volunteers help them out as much as they can, as long as they feel comfortable. Expectations: - Mask are required for anyone delivering meals to our clients. - We are delivering 1-weeks’ worth of food to each client, so make sure you have room in your trunk and backseat for 5-10 large cardboard boxes. Day of the volunteer event: - Please ensure Open Hand has an up to date copy of your automobile insurance card. - Please bring a charged cell phone and a pen! - Meal pick up is at 181 Armour Dr. You will be greeted in our carpool line by a Volunteer Services team member. We will assign you your route, and load the meals in to your car. Please text 5 minutes before you arrive so that we can prepare deliveries. - If you have hand sanitizer, please bring it with you. - After your route, you will only need to return to Open Hand if you have borrowed a cart. - Please text us at (678) 306-6649 and we will take your items inside.

Mission Statement
Mission: Open Hand helps people prevent or better manage chronic disease through Comprehensive Nutrition Care , which combines home-delivered meals and nutrition education as a means to reinforce the connection between informed food choices and improved quality of life. Vision: Open Hand seeks to eliminate disability and untimely death due to nutrition-sensitive chronic disease.
Description
Open Hand prepares, packages, and delivers over 6,000 meals each day to homebound seniors and individuals with chronic and terminal illnesses.
Perhaps our greatest strength is the constant support of thousands of volunteers. At Open Hand, people from all walks of life come together to touch the lives of thousands of others who are not as fortunate. Our volunteers are generally surprised at how much fun they have in the process--due in part to our wonderful food service and distribution staff that, along with other remarkable volunteers, make them feel as though they are always among friends.
Open Hand volunteers package meals, drive meal delivery routes, and work with our senior health and wellness programs. Without the dedication of each and every one of these incredible people, we simply could not do our very necessary work in our community.
We invite you--or a group from your place of business, your social group, your school or your place of worship--to volunteer with us. You’ll find that it’s a thoroughly unique and rewarding experience.
