Would you recommend America for Animals?
It's a very noble cause and a great way to further it. Fun people to work with. The volunteers from within as well as across teams always try to bring the best out of everyone. I love the way I get to use my professional skills to help further a cause I so deeply support. I have been associated with AFA for more than eight months now and its been a wonderful experience so far.
AFA is a rare place for higher-caliber, "intellectual" volunteering. Unlike at most animal welfare org's which only offer low-skill type volunteering, AFA is all volunteer based which means managerial and professional openings are available. I volunteer as a Chief Operating Officer for example, and get to work on lots of cool strategic projects. AFA has a great team too!
I adore this organization. They have so many opportunities for individuals to help and make a difference. They are willing to take a chance on people as long as they have a passion for the cause. They are also willing to learn a person's strengths and capitalize on them. In short, they have amazing people who are fun to work with and many virtual opportunities.
I've had a similar experience as some others regarding the mobile app opportunity. I've been a professional Android engineer for over eight years, with several apps published in the store. A day after applying I received a form email letting me know they could not find a "suitable role" with the team. Either they are grossly incompetent or are not currently looking for a mobile developer and should take down or change the ad to reflect that.
I too had a similar experience as Elizabeth B and Anne M. I expressed interest, received an initial email, and then dead silence. My family is already heavily involved in Animal rights, and I saw this as a perfect way to use my professional skills to help. Not only is the posting still up, it is listed 4 times.
Also, they clearly need help. On this page (where you write reviews) they copied and pasted their Mission Statement and Description with the HTML paragraph tags.
I had similar experience as Anne M. They are horrible with communication. I had phone interview scheduled twice for certain day and time. The first time the person forgot and the second time I heard nothing. When I emailed them about it, they told me they didn't need anyone anymore for that posted listing. However, the posting is still up. I really wanted to use my knowledge of websites for good and I love animals, but unfortunately, the run around they gave me is why I gave them 1 star and why I will gladly help someone else interested.
Great cause but unfortunately, I am going to update this review.
I had a bad experience with this organization. I send an e-mail, they reply and offer me an interview. 1 month after, no call. I send 4 e-mails, no response. I send a negative review on Volunteermatch and suddenly, they send a message to try to figure it out! After several messages with a RH volunteer interested in my application, I re-sent a cover letter and a resume and they answer me (in the Sunday evening and no closing formula) that they are not interested in my application anymore and I don't fit for the position!
This organization has good ideas but wants to empower people throughout new technologies and unfortunately, they have real communication issues...So great cause but so disappointing!
I am an avid animal lover and think that animals should be protected all over the world.
A good cause and a great team!
