Traditions Health of Newport News, d.b.a. Hospice Community Care, is looking for volunteers. We are seeking dedicated Friendly Visitor volunteers to spend time with our patients in Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk or Virginia Beach. Hospice Community Care provides dignified end-of-life care and quality services for our patients and their loved ones. As a Friendly Visitor volunteer, you would spend quality time with your patient by doing things like taking them outside (weather permitting), playing a card game or checkers, watching a classic movie together or simply providing quiet support for your patient with your presence. As a Friendly Visitor volunteer, you will visit your patient in whatever setting they call home; a nursing home, an assisted living facility, an apartment or a house. Friendly Visitor volunteers "bring the sunshine" to their patient by building a bond between themselves and their patient. We will work with your schedule as much as possible but we do ask for five hours a month. To become a Friendly Visitor volunteer, you must be 18 years of age or older, be a licensed driver with current auto insurance and a clean driving records with no DUI's. You must take a TB which Hospice Community Care provides at no cost to you. Training is mandatory and no personal care for the patient (feeding, bathing, dressing) is involved. You will receive training regarding Covid-19 including mask wearing, social distancing and hand washing. As a volunteer with Hospice Community Care, you will be required to follow Covid-19 protocols as they pertain to your patient. Does this sound like an opportunity for you? Hospice Community Care, the Heart of your Community, is experiencing unprecedented growth in the Peninsula area (Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County or York County). We have a great need for dedicated volunteers to provide friendly visits for our terminally ill patients who reside in the Peninsula area. Our mission is to provide dignified end-of-life care and quality services that allow our patients and their families or significant others to live life richly, deeply and meaningfully for as long as it may last and to die with dignity in the setting of their choice. As a Friendly Visitor Volunteer with Hospice Community Care, you would facilitate this mission by spending quality time with a patient on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. Friendly Visitor Volunteers visit patients in whatever setting the patient calls home, i.e., a nursing home, an assisted living facility, a retirement community or a private home or apartment. During a visit, Friendly Visitor Volunteers might read to a patient, play cards or checkers, take the patient outside on a pleasant day or simply hold the patient's hand to provide comfort and support. Friendly Visitors Volunteers provide an extremely valuable service for our patients and their families. All Hospice Community Care Volunteers must pass a background check, a TB test (at no cost to you) and attend training. *You must be at least 18 years of age and have a current driver's license*. In 2020, Covid-19 greatly affected the volunteer component of care offered by Traditions Health Hospice of Glen Allen, formerly known as Hospice Community Care. Many facilities in our area where our patients live in assisted living facilities and nursing homes and are opening up to visits by volunteers for their residents. If you want to volunteer with hospice but not sure you are ready to visit in a facility, we have the perfect solution; you can volunteer with Traditions Health as a Pen Pal! Requirements: You will need to have a dependable vehicle or have the ability to access public transportation as all of your work will be done in our Glen Allen office. You will learn about hospice philosophy. We will provide all the materials you will need to share joy with our patients. You must be vaccinated against Covid in accordance with a recent ruling by the Supreme Court regarding health organizations that receive Medicare funds. We are asking that each Pen Pal volunteer donates five hours of their time a week.

Traditions Health, formerly known as Hospice Community Care cares for terminally ill patients and those who love them. We are looking for Friendly Visitor volunteers to befriend our patients in Glen Allen, Midlothian, Richmond, Hanover, Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton and Virginia Beach. You don't need to have hospice volunteer experience because we will train you. You will visit your patient in whatever setting your patient considers to be home (a house or apartment, a nursing home or assisted living facility) When you visit with your patient, you can play board games like Sorry! or checkers, watch classic movies on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) or weather permitting, you can take your patient outside for fresh air. In these times of Covid, there may be times when all your patient may need you to do to provide supportive presence. You can visit with your patient as many times a month as your patient would like and you are able to visit. Most Friendly Visitors see their patients a minimum of five times a month. To potentially become a Traditions Health volunteer, answer the questions from Volunteer Match below. You must be at least 18 years of age and be a licensed driver with current auto insurance. Unfortunately, if you have a DUI on your driving record at anytime, you will be unable to volunteer. You will need to have a TB test (for which Traditions Health pays) and a background check (which is also paid for by Traditions Health). Your training will take place in Glen Allen or Newport News and you will be assigned to a patient in the area that's closet to where you live or, if you prefer, work or go to school. As a volunteer, you will need to adhere to all CDC guidelines including wearing a mask, hand washing or sanitizing and social distancing. We will train you to be safe and keep your patient safe during the ongoing Covid pandemic.

Are you a veteran or active duty personnel? Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity that allows you to reach out to veterans who are now suffering with a life limiting illness? Traditions Health Hospice of Newport News, Virginia and Glen Allen, Virginia are seeking both veterans and active duty personnel to participate with us as we meet the social and emotional needs of our patients who are veterans. Our veteran patients live in Williamsburg, Newport News, Virginia Beach and Richmond. As a military volunteer, you would spend time with your patient and do things your patient enjoys, like going outside for a walk (weather permitting) or reminiscing about your shared military experiences. To volunteer with Traditions Health, please answer the questions below. You will need to visit the Newport News office or the Glen Allen office by appointment, depending on where you live or work to complete paperwork and to be trained. You will need to submit to a background check and a TB test or chest x-ray, at no cost to you. While we are requesting that you volunteer a minimum of five hours a month, we will work with your schedule. Traditions Health Hospice observes all COVID protocols including social distancing, handwashing or hand sanitizing and mask wearing.
