Description

826michigan is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting public students aged 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. We believe that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. To make that a reality, we provide after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. We also believe that the more fun a student has, and the more directly we speak to a student's interests, the more we can help students find the fun in learning. That's why our programs are more than just extra homework. Students can come to 826 for help and inspiration for all kinds of things, from poetry to storytelling, writing songs to writing college entrance essays, finishing novels to starting haikus. And of course, homework of all kinds too. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice. And best of all, all 826michigan events and activities are offered completely free of charge.

826michigan is a fantastic organization. I volunteered there for two years, including one year as the Field Trips Intern. There are heaps of opportunities to get involved, ranging from tutoring students one-on-one to helping out in the robot shop to copy-editing one of the amazing student publications. Volunteering at 826 is interesting, energizing (while also exhausting, in a good way), varied, and very fulfilling. 826michigan students are clever and fun and zany and so excited to work with adults who care about them and want to help them succeed. And you really are helping them succeed. 826michigan is a nonprofit that is well-run and consistently focused and effective in its goals, in addition to being the sort of place that doesn't cut corners when it comes to the work that it does, which means that you will walk away feeling like you really contributed something. Finally, 826michigan is a great place to meet new people if you're new in town or just looking for more friends.
