The UMLAUF is seeking help at our visitor services desk on weekends! The UMLAUF's volunteers are our public facing ambassadors during our open hours.It's a rewarding role in which you get to have meaningful conversations with visitors about art, nature, and a love of Austin. This position is ideal for people seeking regular volunteer work in a calm environment witha strong sense of community! Our volunteers make this place run andwe're so appreciative. UMLAUF Mission: To cultivate curiosity, community, and connection through nature, contemporary artists, and the work of Charles Umlauf. Title: Front Desk Associate Department: Visitor Services Reports To: Museum Manager Works With: All museum staff and the public Responsibilities: Make admission and gift shop sales Inform visitors of the current exhibitions and collection Engage with visitors to provide a personable and welcoming experience Maintain a tidy Gallery and Gift Shop space Monitor the Gallery to ensure all Museum policies are followed Answer phone calls and general questions Must be comfortable using an iPad-style point of sale system and handling cash Scheduling: Saturdays and Sundays. 11AM-1:30PM or 1:30PM-4PM shifts. Volunteers have the ability to choose their desired shifts on a shared calendar. We request volunteers commit to at least 1 shift per month for at least 1 year. Physical Requirements: This position can be carried out either seated or standing. Use of the point of sale system and monitoring the behaviors of guests will require sight. Onboarding, Training and Support: There is always a staff member present and engaged alongside the volunteer. A recorded training on front desk operations is available for viewing ahead of the shift. Volunteers are also trained day-of and shadow the staff member, taking turns checking guests in. We will request a background check and invite our volunteers to share or cover the cost (typically around $20, depends on states lived in previously). We are always happy to pay in full if this is a barrier to you, no questions asked. If you have questions or concerns about the background check, please don't hesitate to reach out. About the Environment: This position takes place in an indoor, climate controlled art gallery. The gallery has large windows that provide ample natural light. Conversations are often amplified inside due to the acoustics of the space. Volunteers are welcome to and encouraged to stroll the outdoor grounds which are paved by a gravel trail. Volunteers are able to use a private staff restroom, kitchen with refrigerator and microwave, and have easy access to drinking water. Volunteers are welcome to bring snacks if needed.

Volunteer for Art Museum Public Events!

The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum is getting ready for our annual fall festival, StrawFest! We are seeking a mighty team of volunteers to help with activities such as pumpkin painting, carnival games, crafts, a bird of prey show, and more! StrawFest is Sunday October 27th, 2024 with shifts from 10:30AM-2PM or 1PM-4:30PM. All volunteers will be expected to attend a brief virtual training on October 23rd at 5PM. Below is our general programs volunteer position description: Volunteering at Public Programs The UMLAUF serves the local arts scene in part by hosting special events including exhibition receptions, UMLAUF After Dark, Insights Talks, and Family Day. Volunteers for programs are often art enthusiasts with excellent people skills and a keen interest in cultivating a rich cultural community in Austin. Title : Programs Partner Department : Visitor Services Reports To : Museum Manager and/or department manager(s) of the event (day-of) Works With : All museum staff and the public Responsibilities: Tasks will vary depending on the program’s needs. Generally, you can expect to: Attend a virtual training the week before the event. Help with set up and break down Check in guests Make admission sales (for ticketed events) Track attendance Inform visitors of the program schedule, exhibitions, and collection Engage with visitors to provide a personable and welcoming experience Maintain a tidy Museum and Garden Monitor the Gallery to ensure all Museum policies are followed Answer phone calls and general questions Operate activity tables (Family Day) Assist bartenders and vendors as needed (adult programs) You may be asked to use an iPad-style point of sale system and handle cash Shifts : UMLAUF After Dark: Every other first Tuesday 4:30PM-8:30PM Drinks, arts experiences such as live music or art demos, extended hours, and more! Family Day: Every second Sunday 10:30AM-4:15PM Crafts, scavenger hunts, storytime readings, and more! Insights Talks and exhibition receptions: Dates and times vary, typically one/quarter We request that volunteers commit to at least 1 shift/month for at least 1 year. The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum is a non-profit organization founded around the work of American sculptor Charles Umlauf. The full range of Charles Umlauf's incredible work can be seen in both permanent and changing exhibitions inside the museum as well as outside in a garden setting.

Umlauf Gardens is a really fun, laid-back environment that makes me wonder if I am really volunteering, or simply hosting a big party at my magical sculpture house. The sculptures are beautiful, the coordinators are knowledgeable, the visitors are fun to interact with. And the perks are awesome. How do you like free admission? I do. How about invitations to events and dinners? Yep. And what about snacks? There will be snacks. All and all, Umlauf is a great place to be.
